Meet James Hong of Perpixel Photography in La Mirada

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Hong.

Thanks for sharing your story with us James. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am the owner and principal photographer of Perpixel Photography.

Throughout my life, I was fascinated with photography. I remember visits to the library and going through countless National Geographic magazines. This fascination got more serious during my early years of college. I wanted to understand what made a “great” photo.

While I was saving up for my first SLR camera, I studied photography terminology and composition. In the meantime, I was using my parent’s shoot-and-point dinky camera without the ability for depth of field or manual control. I practice composition and had to get real creative to get good shots. It took me a full year to save up for my first Nikon.

My fascination quickly turned into a passion. I even switched my major to Photo communications. After college, I got my first photography job as a second photographer at a big wedding photography company. About 6 months in, I got promoted to lead photographer. Two years later, I started my own company.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I was a one-man team for many years. I had to wear multiple hats as a wedding photographer, business owner, marketer, etc. It was a struggle for me to learn the business side of things. I always thought if I produce good work, clients will naturally come. I quickly realized that that’s not true and branding and image goes a long way.

Perpixel Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We have been in the wedding photography business for 10 years and have over 250+ weddings under our belts. We are a team of skilled and dedicated photographers and our style is a marriage between photojournalism and fine art. We love capturing moments as they happen and strive to get every detail of your wedding. Our images have been described as candid, emotional, fun, and romantic.

We are published on The Knot Magazine, Ceremony Magazine, Style Me Pretty, Pop Sugar, Apartment Therapy and several other big named publications.

Also, we are always looking to cultivate new interns and photographers!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Proudest moment was when I walked into a Barnes and Noble, opened up The Knot magazine and saw my work in print for the first time.
