Meet Jamea Hill of Green Family Jewels

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamea Hill.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It was in Earnestine Green’s honor that Green Family Jewels emerged and then grew through my community presence. Word of mouth gets the news around, especially when rhinestones are involved. I started making blankets, bedazzling apparel and handcrafting Basketball Wives earrings and suddenly, folks started buying them. What started out as a hobby soon grew into the discovery of my purpose, passion, and business headquartered in my mother’s living room. I got to where I am today with the support of my family, friends, and Bling Queens. There is no way possible that I would have imagined that a hustle would’ve turned into a full on business.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has not been smooth as trials and tribulations of life will always be right around the corner waiting for you. My Granny, before her passing, owned various businesses in South LA in the 1960’s and I wanted to follow in her footsteps, but I had to learn everything on my own and it has cost me a lot of money and time. Some of the struggles includes finances, marketing, social media, creative blockage, website design, and of course personal struggles all rolled into one. One of my biggest struggles was asking for help. I am beyond grateful for the business relationships that I have built over the years with some amazing entrepreneurs. We all go through some of the same humps along the road and having people that can relate to some of my struggles to guide me through or for them to come to me with some of their struggles where I can guide them through as well has made my journey that much smoother.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Green Family Jewels LLC story. Tell us more about the business.
We specialize in rhinestone apparel, bling hats, purses, Ghanaian fans, rhinestone glasses, custom jackets and Ankara sets. Our family believes that the community is cared for through the ways in which we engage and express ourselves. A team-color can unite a stadium of strangers, the same way a viral TV show can unite a generation of viewers. Green Family Jewels appreciates the commonality that is shared through something as simple as a t-shirt and this is what sets us apart from others. Visiting our booth is like going to your favorite cousin’s house. We are most proud of the relationships we’ve built over the years with our customers. As we like to say, it’s not a shirt, it’s an experience! I actually have customers who calls me cousin now (insert smile). Established in 2008, our family business has brought communities together through the expression of family, fashion, and fun. Green Family Jewels also paved the way for our two new brands – Brea’s Creations (founded by my 10-year-old daughter), and The Finer Shop.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I personally do not believe in luck. I believe that we all have a purpose and once we identify our purpose on this earth, the real journey begins. As I stated before, trials and tribulations of life hits every single person at some point and we must pick up the pieces and move along our journey as our purpose is counting on it.
