Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamal Matthews.
Jamal, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been doing music since I was in 7th grade. I’ve always prided myself on individuality and being unique. I started off in the group “334 Paperchasers” with two of my friends, who I am still till this day cool with. For me music is passion and has gotten me thru a lot of trials and tribulations. As I grew more into myself, you could hear my music evolve. With legal troubles over my head, I’ve still managed to drop two solo projects in which I invested my own money into. These two projects are Purple Pikachu and Lavender Player. Purple Pikachu speaks more to my rockstar nature, whereas Lavender Player gears more toward my debonair ways. A player rockstar if you will. A contradicting pair. I was once told that my vibe is majestic so I ran with that. I also have plans to launch a clothing brand entitled “Black Unicorn!” Initials “B+U” emphasizing being YOURSELF. Be weird, be strong, be cool, “Bold”+”Unique” = B U(be you)! I still have some things I want to brush up with that but I consider myself as a brand and business. Booku DeBonaire, rockstar Player, black unicorn, a true individual. My story is never ending. I plan to be legendary. I got to where I am by believing in myself and I will get where I want to be by going harder than I ever have!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s still a rough road and most of my challenges come from self-inflicted legal issues. I won’t speak too much on them but right now, I’m my own worst enemy. Pros and cons of living as an impulsive rockstar. Run ins with the law, getting locked up, sometimes being too intoxicated and taking things too far. These are all struggles I’ve dealt with. Breakups and putting focus into dead-end relationships. I’ve definitely been moving like a bachelor now to stray away from non inspiring relations. Money gets tight too. I’ve had struggles in that department as well especially when my uncle got locked up. He was my roommate at a critical time, and his absence caused me to have to pay more on bills. Sacrifice is the name of the game and I’ve only begun.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a songwriter, performer, entertainer, and I have knowledge in production. The service I provide is entertainment. I have a vivid imagination so I have creative director potential. I specialize in writing about specific topics to convey a message to a crowd. I’m very good with my words, both on paper and vocally. I am able to record audio for any type of project. Although I haven’t been tasked with any jingle writing gigs or movie soundtrack opportunities, I’m fully capable. What sets me apart is my versatility and open mind. What the next person won’t even attempt to do, I’ll be willing to give a go. I don’t limit myself to genre, subject matter, or any boundaries. I reach outside my realm of understanding to satisfy any potential client. I am most proud of my commitment to being myself. While I am open-minded I do set limits on what’s outside of my moral beliefs. Not to be disrespectful but if it doesn’t fit my moral standards then I just simply cannot perform the task. Every business has to stand for something and have principles.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My biggest plan of change is to clean up my image. I have to clear the path for myself so that there aren’t any hindrance. As I said earlier, I have intentions on dropping a clothing line. I want to make sure the foundation is strong, my message is clear, I know my audience, and last but certainly not least, that I provide quality products. Black Unicorn will be nothing short of its name, MAJESTIC! I plan to indulge more into my rockstar player persona. When you see me you’ll know exactly what and who I am. I want to live and breathe my brand. Fully engulf myself, just making the necessary connections now.
