Today we’d like to introduce you to Jakyra Jacquess
Hi Jakyra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always been a fan of music since I was little I watched a video countdown shows for example 1 06 and Park, VH1 soul and TRL. And I’ve always wanted to be a music Director to showcase my visionary and creative ideas so I took the time to research and look at those shows to get a idea of what I want to do with my show and I kind of took a twist of 1 06 and Park and TRL and VH1 so and created JAKYRA radio Input a modern twist with like an early 2000s vibe to it keeping up with a lot of independent artist and some mainstream artist just to get people to see what’s out there musically and also if they want or already know about the artist and would like to know more information so it’s my baby but with the influences of those shows.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Creating “J.A.K.Y.R.A Radio” has been a wild ride, especially navigating the maze of copyrighted music and license music on YouTube and TikTok. It hasn’t been easy—this year’s been a real test of patience—but I thrive on these challenges because I know where I want to take my show.
Consistency is key, and though it’s tough juggling a full-time job with this passion project, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Whenever someone asks if it’s easy, I laugh. No, it’s not, but if you love music and are passionate about what you do, it feels like second nature. While others might see the struggle, I see the dream. The road might be bumpy, but it’s the journey I’ve always wanted. It’s not about smooth sailing; it’s about steering the ship no matter the waters.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
For the past 15 years, I’ve been deeply involved in childcare, from babysitting to becoming a paraprofessional for kids with special needs. I’ve always loved working with kids and being a mentor to them. However, it hasn’t been an easy journey.
While I enjoy working with children, I’ve seen it primarily as a stepping stone to support my passion projects. It’s a means to an end, helping me fund what I truly love. But I always tell people, if you love working with kids, put your heart into it. Many kids need a good mentor to guide them towards their future dreams.
What I’m proudest of is my hustle and determination. I don’t give up easily—I keep pushing forward. Yet, I also know when to humble myself and recognize the moments that call for humility. This balance keeps me grounded and motivated to continue on my path.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I do read a lot of books anything with Toni Morrison another book called black girl call home. I just got into why men love bitches that has been a very good insight. Also, I read read interview with the vampire. I’m getting a two vampire list, stat and queen of the Damn so that whole trilogy. Fun fact, I’ve always wanted to play Akasha but you know I’m just putting it out there podcast. I haven’t listen to any podcast late because I haven’t found anyone that I really want to listen to.
I know this sounds cliché, but going back to the books. I would say the artist way has helped me creatively, especially writing because I tend to know what to say verbally but when it comes to pain and paper, sometimes I get mixed up and my mind is moving a mile a minute while my hands are not going as fast as the pin to the paper, those resources that stated above help me and really help me through life But also, I use it as a form to like escape.
