Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Lyle.
Hi Jake, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m originally from Minnesota. I moved to LA to work in entertainment. I’ve done pretty much every job in front of and behind the camera, from running and getting meals all the way through to Producing a feature film. Through that work and travel, I slowly fell in love with photography, and being behind the camera, and started doing more and more of it for my own enjoyment. Pretty soon people started paying me for it, and now it’s what I do full time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Freelancing is never a smooth road. It’s hard not knowing how much money is coming or when. I’m always feeling like there’s more I need to be doing to build more business or now to grow a social media following. But I always find the things that bring the most joy, and usually turn into those other things, are the projects I do for myself, or that feel the most fun. The things that I’m not doing for the money.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a photographer who specializes in fashion and portrait photography. I’m most proud of my work with a men’s jewelry line called We Are All Smith. That brand and I have evolved in such a cool way together, and taken their imagery to a whole new level. I think the main thing that sets me and my work apart from others is my adaptability. I can work with and in any situation with any tools and create something I’m stoked on.
What makes you happy?
My family makes me the happiest. My partner Amy and I have a 4 year old daughter named Scout who is just about the coolest person I’ve ever met. Our fuzzy buddy Timber is pretty rad too. They all bring out the best in me.
When it comes to my work, I love taking a concept from the initial spark of an idea all the way through the final result. Bringing together the brand, models, locations, and styling and making great images. All the creative collaboration with the people involved in making a shoot happen. THAT is the best part of it.
