Today we’d like to introduce you to Jahdai Pickett.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jahdai. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started this journey as a film degree graduate from UC Berkeley. I started doing stand up comedy in 2009 in Los Angeles. I started making sketches around 2010 however, I wasn’t consistent. It wasn’t until 2017 when I put everything together. Meaning I gathered all my know how from writing comedic shorts sketches to producing them and most of was extremely consistent. I started dropping at least two videos a week on Instagram from early 2017. I dropped a sketch called “Tiberius: The Hood Hitman” and it went viral. That’s when things for me started to change. My followers on all three platforms (IG…Facebook…YouTube) started growing and then opportunities and worldwide notice took place.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been pretty smooth because I love what I do. It’s not a chore or work for me. I enjoy shooting and editing so its fun for me. The only challenging factor is the late night hours editing. I find myself editing well into the night and therefore I’m quite tired the next day. But at the end of day it’s worth it to me.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m a filmmaker that makes sketches for social media platforms. I’m most proud of The Brand I’ve been blessed to develop. What sets me apart from others is my unique content. I typically create sketches based off my experiences growing up and the certain situations I’ve encountered even as an adult. I feel I do a good job translating the idea to screen and most people who watch can see that. I consider my style of content to be “Hood Good Comedy”, my influences being Martin Lawrence, Eddie Murphy, Jamie Fox, Spike Lee, etc. I want to bring back that Urban Comedy that I feel has been lost over the last two decades. These sketches so far is a good start.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
North Hollywood is basically an extension of Los Angeles, and LA is the perfect city to start a media company or production company.
