Meet Jacques Williams of Irk Originals in Downtown LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacques Williams.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jacques. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a kid, I can always remember drawing. I love to draw lowrider, shoes and comics. I started to draw on shirts, pants and backpacks in high school to make a few bucks. After high school, I started to do more and more custom shirts which led me to start making my own art pieces. I started to connect with other artists and realized that I could make good money if I just stick with it. I started to utilize social media to showcase my art and participate in local art shows. Today, my focus is my wearable art apparel and my one of a kind art pieces.

Has it been a smooth road?
I remember when I first started to make custom shirts, I had a lack of creative freedom. Customers just wanted me to draw cartoons that matched their shoes. I laugh about it now but back in the day nobody wanted me to put Irk Originals on their shirt either. It’s a different story today, now customers will say do what you want on it and they want Irk Originals on it. But my biggest struggle is me, I am my toughest critic. I nitpick and overthink my art pieces which result in never thinking that my pieces are complete.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Irk Originals – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Irk Originals started in 2003 with basic custom designs on shirts however, the company has evolved into wearable art apparel, custom apparel and canvas, and one of a kind art pieces that I personally create. I’m best known for my original art pieces which allows me to express myself creatively. I’m most proud of my new wearable art apparel because it gives my customers an opportunity to have an art piece at an affordable price. My art varies from my love of Hip Hop to what’s going on around the world or in the community. Some of my art reflects my thoughts or visions.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love everything L.A.
