Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaclyn Tuchman.
Hi Jaclyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in Chicago, moved to Arizona with my family while in high school and came to LA when I was nineteen. My plan was to pursue an acting career and not much else. I got a job at a bar and wasted time between rare auditions. I was getting bored and I was never really bored much growing up. I was missing something important; art, hobbies, community. I took ceramics in high school and fell in love then, managing to take it every year, sometimes twice a day. So, I looked up local studios, joined the closest one to me, a studio in Highland Park. I then started my brand Wild Matter Ceramics, met my former boss and dear friend Meegan Barnes and found the community I was searching for. Six years later and I’m happy with my current acting career but my days are still mostly spent making pottery. I now work in production pottery for a local brand, Mizrahi-Hellmann Ceramics. Wild Matter still exists in small batches while I branch out into other hobbies and artistic mediums.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There have been many bumps in the road along the way and while the road has gotten smoother, I’m still very much figuring it all out. My number one challenge was finding happiness outside my career so I could even sustain that career. I then found that being able to enjoy my life sans success has lead to most unexpected opportunities. Being told “it’s all about who you know” can seem daunting when you don’t know many people, but when you find communities you can genuinely thrive in, all the sudden you start to know the right people for you.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an Artist and Actor. I began acting as a teen doing comedy sports in Chicago. I moved to LA after high school and began acting, modeling and pursuing other creative careers. I have my own brand of nature-inspired ceramic wares called Wild Matter Ceramics. I’ve assisted other successful artists in a multitude of mediums and currently work as a production potter making hundreds of high-end ceramics wares for another local brand. On the side, I work with oil pastels finding my style with self-portraiture.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
When I’m alone in the studio, I’m usually listening to WTF with Marc Maron. I learn so much from hearing the stories of others. It’s both informing and at times validating, hearing the struggles and successes of others. I also just think Marc is a hilarious and awesomely self-aware dude.
