Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Chow.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began entertaining the idea of working in music my sophomore year in college. Music had always been something very important and personal for me but I never considered it as a career. I didn’t have much experience at first, but I applied for a lot of internships, worked through the rest of school and ended up at Slush!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not an easy path haha
There were many times that I wanted to give up and the self-doubt in the back of my mind worried that I’d never find a job and that none of this would work out. Sometimes I thought maybe it would’ve been easier if I chose a more “normal” career.
I sort of plunged into the music world on my own, and it really is just as exciting as it is intimidating. I’m pretty introverted by nature too and it took me a while to figure out how to talk to and meet new people. I think I’m much more comfortable now, but I’m definitely still the person browsing Reddit in the corner of the nightclub.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Slush Management – what should we know?
Slush Management is an artist management company and we work mostly in the electronic/dance music sphere (but lately we’ve been branching out with some of our newer clients into other realms like film, TV, fashion, etc.). Our roster includes artists such as Grey, Lauren Tsai, Porter Robinson / Virtual Self, Shadient, SLUMBERJACK, and WAVEDASH. We’re fortunate to be working with such talented individuals and it’s always exciting to see what they want to do next!
I’m a day-to-day manager so that’s everything from handling social media to scheduling and logistics to contributing creative ideas on upcoming projects. Slush is a small team and everyone does a bit of everything so we’re all constantly learning new things. Our approach to a challenge is positive, and generally a well thought out/discussed team effort. We care about our artists like family and will work as hard as we can to bring their artistic visions to life.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I’m going to list a few: learning quickly, thinking outside the box, being detail-oriented, trusting and formulating your own opinions, kindness towards others, patience and perseverance, self-care.
