Meet Jackie Alixander of Swerve Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Alixander.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I arrived in Los Angeles six years ago from New Zealand, and moved into an apartment right next to the Beverly Center. I was riding the bus one day and as I was daydreaming out the window I saw Swerve’s sign. I had been a regional manager of 14 fitness clubs in Australia for a few years before I arrived, along with starting a Reiki practice, so when I saw this hippy boutique looking fitness studio I thought that would be an ideal change of pace for me. I emailed asking about vacancies and ended up working the desk about a month later. Since then I moved on to managing Swerve, have grown my Reiki practice and facilitate Reiki Meditation classes at Swerve.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Boutique fitness is never a smooth road, and Los Angeles is saturated with fitness studios. Like any small business, there are ebbs and flows. Swerve has held space among the fitness staples and fads for over 16 years now, I attribute a lot of that to having such an amazing and talented team, who are also generous and dedicated.

Swerve Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Swerve is a boutique fitness studio. We offer group classes as well as private training in the gym, or private use. Our studio is available as a rental space outside of our regular scheduled classes. Swerve stands out from other studios because we offer a very diverse range of classes, from dance fitness to meditation to sculpt. Swerve is also the home of Yoga Booty Ballet® there are a lot of studios that offer this class, however, Swerve is home to the ladies who created it and is also the main training center for YBB® instructors.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me personally, success is feeling good about what you do or have achieved. A sense of pride is very important to me. Being an energy worker, I want to know that I have affected people in a positive way every day. Not just occasionally, but every day. That is success for me.
