Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Gravina.
Jack, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up in New Jersey I was constantly making movies and music with my family, friends, and neighbors. I loved everything about telling stories, engaging people and then seeing their reactions. I was also fascinated with what a big part music played in telling stories. Sometimes my friends and I would mute the TV when the nature series Planet Earth was playing and create our soundtrack for the beautiful images.
When I moved to Los Angeles eight years ago, my first job was an internship with John Powell – an incredible film composer whom I really admire. As an intern, I learned a lot about film scoring at the highest level, and I also occasionally got to bath his poodles.
I then landed a full-time gig working as an editor at Discovery Studios. During the day I would edit TV shows, and on nights and weekends, I would compose music for as many independent projects as I could take on. One of which was an animated short film called “Soar,” directed by Alyce Tzue – a childhood friend. Soar went on to win many awards including a student Academy Award.
While I was editing at Discovery, I begged producers to let me write music for their shows. Eventually, they decided to give me a shot. While writing music on a true crime series (that I was also editing) called “True Nightmares”, I saw a bigger opportunity, so I partnered with a great friend and composer, Daniel Rojas. Together we created a music production company called Nimble Music, which provides music for multiple networks including Discovery, TLC, Vice, and Showtime. Nimble has just launched a new service providing music packages for podcasters.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Working as a full-time picture editor and composer has been extremely challenging bec
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I’ve edited a wide range of unscripted series from the top car show in the world, “Wheeler Dealers” to the new true crime series I’m working on currently called “Deadly Recall”. I’ve recently joined the Editors Guild, and I’m excited to begin working on scripted series in 2019.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I’m a firm believer that doers succeed. Having a great idea isn’t enough. It takes follow through and discipline to train the muscles you need to accomplish your goals.
