Today we’d like to introduce you to Itay Zach.
Foodshop is an underground supper club and communal dining experience started in 2010 in Venice, CA. The co-founders Itay and Hyejin met in Architecture grad school and quickly became friends through a shared interest in Architecture and design. But their real friendship was forged while traveling to different parts of the world and discovering their shared love for food and community. They decided to start their own community with their good friends, cooking and eating together around a small table every weekend. As word spread, more and more friends wanted to join in and before they knew it, Itay’s backyard became home to a regular dinner party. Soon after, Hyejin & Itay began hosting dinners at their friend’s metal shop in Venice, and Foodshop was born. Since then Foodshop has been doing series of monthly events at unique and architecturally inspiring locations around town.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s certainly been an interesting ride. Foodshop started as a passion hobby, a quicker creative outlet, we didn’t expect much at the beginning. After some ups and downs we figured out some of the important cornerstones of our business model and stuck to them. It took off from there and grew quickly. We still make adjustments from time to time but the basic model is still intact.
Foodshop – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Itay focuses more on finding spaces, menu design, and logistics.
Hyejin loves creating desserts and manages the staff and finances.
We are definitely most proud of the diverse and unique community we’ve created in LA, and that sets us apart from other companies in LA.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Enjoying doing and creating what you love.
