Meet Ishan Puri of Synocate in Ventura County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ishan Puri.

Ishan founded Synocate with a team of Harvard, Stanford, and UC graduates who set out to simplify and explain the US college admissions system and guide parents and students through the increasingly competitive process.

Ishan – please share your story with us.
We use a holistic approach to college counseling where we help with every aspect of an applicant’s application: building the college list and determining ED/EA strategy, advising on course selection (AP, IB, honors, etc.), planning SAT/ACT strategy, improving student’s extracurricular activities, applying to summer programs, and most importantly, essay editing from top essay editors (Ivy League humanities majors).

It is no secret that the most successful applicants at the most selective schools have something that makes them special and allows them to stand out in the crowd. We work with our students to help them discover their passions and showcase their skills and talents to make admissions officers take notice.

We’re proud of our stellar track record of acceptances (see synocate.com/results) and have helped hundreds of students get accepted to Ivy League schools, Stanford, elite tech schools like MIT and Caltech, selective liberal arts schools, and Public Ivies (UCs, UMich, UVA, etc.).

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When Ishan first started working on college admissions, he wrote the book, The Applicant. A few weeks after the book came out and Ishan received some initial publicity about the book, he was contacted by a parent who bought his book and wanted Ishan to work with his son personally. “Look, the book is great but he won’t even read it,” the kid’s father said. “So how about you work one-on-one with my son?” Ishan realized at this point that writing a book wasn’t going to be enough, and that this problem called for a more comprehensive solution. Today, Synocate is that solution.

Please tell us about Synocate.
Synocate takes a holistic approach to college counseling where we help with every aspect of an applicant’s application: from building the college list and determining the ED/REA strategy, to advice on course selection (AP, IB, honors, etc.) and AP and SAT II selection, from improving a student’s extracurricular activities, to applying to summer programs. Most importantly, we bring in the best essay editors in the business (think Ivy League humanities grads) to help edit and perfect the applications.

How we’re different:
– Our counselors come from top 20 schools exclusively, some of our counselors have graduate degrees from top 20 graduate schools as well
– We use insights gleaned from a proprietary database about college admissions to triple our students’ odds of admissions
– We have former admissions officers on staff from places like Harvard, Stanford, and Columbia to manage our counselors and share their inside information

What we’re known for:
– Top 50 college admissions
– Helping students find their extracurricular passions and uniting them with their academic interests
– Top quality editing from Ivy League humanities grads
– Using insights from data including the Common Data Set (CDS), accepted essays, and  interviews with former top 15 admissions officers

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Started this even earlier.
