Today we’d like to introduce you to Isaac Edwards.
Isaac, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with four brothers and five sisters. Life wasn’t like any other kid in the hood, we had it the roughest. I was well known in the neighborhood, everybody called me cali cause summers I would go to California with my brother-in-law and sister that lived in Moreno Valley, CA. I stayed in Milwaukee til I turned 11, ended up moving to Mississippi with my dad to get guidance and was getting in too much trouble. Honestly, it worked, a lil bit. I was taught the southern respect and ended up playing football and was very good at it. About 2-3 years later my dad died from cancer, I was so young I really didn’t understand.
Now that I’m older, I believe I really moved With him because he was sick and knew he didn’t have long. When he passed, I moved to Moreno Valley with my sister. That’s where I took football to the next level, I used losing my dad as motivation. Took my football team to the championship two years in a row, and won state MVP one of those 2. But deep down, I always wanted to grow up with my younger siblings, moving back to Milwaukee was the best and worse thing I could have done. I went thru situations I can’t talk about, witnessed things I gotta take to the grave, and at the same time had to be the man of the house cause my mom was single and struggling. No matter what we made it work tho. But three years later my mom died in her sleep, cause everything to tumble once again. With no mom or dad at 16 I’m really on my own even tho I had family reaching out to help. Had to start hustling. Ended up moving with my aunt, she really did her best and took in all of my mom kids. I’ll always respect her for that.
Fast forward to three years from that, I’m in college with a football scholarship to Concordia University, seems like things are on the up and up, then one night my brother that was an inspiring rapper from the city was killed in a robbery. He literally died in my arms, I think about everyday at least five times. I always rapped with him but never took it serious as he did. When he died I had to live his dream for him, I took music very serious. I would Spend my last 40$ on a studio session. Finally in August 2018 I dropped my debut mixtape “$elfish” I just told my story and it went crazy. I dropped two more projects that year. Now I moved to California for a bigger music market, and now I’ve managed my Drew Down Ent.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not at all, I lost my mom, dad, and brother who was also my bestfriend.
Please tell us about Young Papi – Drew Down Ent.
I am an artist that tells my story better than anybody can. I also have a distinctive sound, what sets me apart from other rappers is my business mindset that my manager has passed on to me & I can paint a picture with my music.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t change anything because it made me who I am today. But I do wish I could’ve been there to protect my brother. He shouldn’t have went out that way.
