Meet Ione Martinez of Haus 353 in Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ione Martinez.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started interning out of high school and during college at 19 years old. I interned for a couple of event planning companies based out of LA and fell in love with the industry. I had always been interested in planning and coordinating large productions. I was fascinated with discovering how amazing things come together from the conception and early stages.

I did this for a few years and also really enjoyed other hobbies including sewing, film, fashion, and floral design. At 21, I opened my first business with my best friend and partner. We owned and operated a food truck in Orange County and I learned so much about the mechanics of running a business and discovered the some secrets of how to turn what you love into your job. Fast forward to 26, I decided to turn my hobbies and passions into a unique operation which incorporated floral design with event coordination. I started from scratch and searched the internet for any opportunities and leads. Because I started from scratch and had no experience really on my own, it was difficult for a small business like me to stand out with an online presence on platforms like Yelp, The Knot, and Weddingwire. I discovered an App called Thumbtack, which I think played a huge role in where I am today. It helped me find great couples and people to work with and presented so many opportunities for me to be able to put myself out there and share what I love through my work.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think It has never been easy but that doesn’t mean it’s not enjoyable. I find the struggles to be super necessary for growth. From these, we can learn and perfect our system and crafts. When you aren’t learning any more about your job or industry or you are no longer passionate about what you do that presents a different set of obstacles and challenges. At that point, a smooth road may need to be reinvented or shaken up to be able to prepare for the next step in your business and development. When you decide to do things on your own and run your own small business, you have to make all of those mistakes yourself. It’s you who is waking up early putting in the work and staying up all night getting ready for the next day. It’s always important to “stay hungry and stay foolish” as well.
