Today we’d like to introduce you to India Coombs.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and (mostly) raised in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Growing up, my mother was always supportive of the arts, encouraging my brothers and I to participate in dance, music, and whatever struck our fancy. I took up the violin for a few years but always felt most alive belting out my favorite pop songs.
I started acting and doing my fair share of musical theater before I realized I didn’t quite feel connected to this particular style of expression. Even now, my father is always playing guitar, mainly the blues, and as a kid, I loved singing along with him. I taught myself a few chords and got hooked on writing my own songs.
As time progressed I tried making music with a few different people on the east coast but it never quite clicked or, more frustratingly, the ones that did weren’t interested in having a female singer. After graduating High School, I promptly packed my pickup truck and drove across the country with my best friend to Los Angeles where we couch surfed until finding an apartment.
Very soon after settling in, I met Jon Joseph, my co-writer and producer. We’ve been recording music together for almost five years now, and it’s been a dream. We’ve released one an EP and a few singles which I’ve gotten the opportunity to perform across the country. We’ll soon be releasing a new EP and hope 2019 includes rocking out with even more friends and fans in all the cities, in all the worlds!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being that I record with Jon but do not perform with him, I’ve gradually added members to my live band made up of my truly sweet, talented friends.
While I love playing with these wonderful pals, All Things Blue is not their project, so I am the one solely responsible for getting the ATB sails up and blowing in the wind. And, as much as everyone hates the fact that money is involved in art being made, it takes a nice chunk of it, and there is only so much DIY music an artist can do while working a full-time job.
Moving to LA without knowing anyone made it a bit of a long haul to meet people in the “industry” as to book shows, have my music shared, ya know get ATB growin and such.
All Things Blue – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I don’t see my music as something that sets me apart as much as something that I hope will help to connect people.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me would just mean that I could consistently be able to create and feel that I am at least on the outer circles of the capitalist cycle that our society binds us to.
