Meet Imani Mitchell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Imani Mitchell.

Hi Imani, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I developed my love of storytelling in my childhood. I was constantly immersed in my imagination and creativity. This love blossomed into a love for acting. I began my professional journey in film and theatre as an aspiring actor who was hungry for well-written roles. This proved to be challenging. I found that it was hard to find the roles I was interested in, especially roles for Black women. I desperately wanted roles where we are allowed to be complex and three-dimensional. This led to the formation of IAM Studios and the creation of my first feature film, WHIRLPOOL. I was intentional in shooting the film entirely in my hometown of Sacramento and employing local talent of color. Currently, IAM Studios is the vehicle to produce my work but also a production company to support creatives of color and showcase works that are authentic, nuanced, and impactful.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve found there is no way to escape the struggle as a creative. Creating my own original works is laborious, time-consuming, and frankly – expensive. However, it is a struggle I welcome and am comfortable with.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I develop original works (both film and theatre) that primarily highlight the complexity of the Black experience. My mediums include film, theatre, and acting. In the past few years, I have dived into the world of theatre directing which is very extensive but rewarding. I’m most proud of my resourcefulness and tenacity. If I know it’s something I can accomplish, there’s no stopping me – even if it’s something I have no experience in. Also, I think my experiences as a woman of color impact my creativity and development. I’m very community-oriented and love collaboration.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Observation. Observation is key to storytelling and acting. I’m constantly in tune with the world around me and try to understand why people do what they do.
