Meet Ilai Segal of Skinilai

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ilai Segal.

Ilai, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Since I was a teenage girl I suffered from severe facial acne it was an up and down battle. I felt self-conscious about my face and I made it my personal mission to find a solution. I was constantly picking at my face and experimenting with different products. After lots of trial and error, I found success in clearing my skin and it felt so good. I was inspired by my journey and decided to enroll in beauty school. I had to learn more about the skin and how to treat it, I wanted to help others be acne free and feel facial freedom.

After I got my license, I started to work as an esthetician in a small salon in the San Fernando Valley, I had a treatment bed and my two hands. With an open mind, I was eager to get started and learn, I felt extremely lucky to get paid for doing facials and helping people improve the appearance of their skin.

Curiosity and ambition flowed through my veins, I was ready to conquer this beautiful world that had opened to me. I researched, investigated, and enriched my knowledge and hands-on experience as much as possible. For many years, I worked non-stop, nothing held me back. The results came quickly, every client that left my treatment room referred her friends and soon my name was passed from person to person. After non-stop intensive work, thousands of facials, different skin types and numerous problematic skin conditions, my client list grew extensively.

Today, with over 22 years of experience, I have my own private clinic at the Tarzana Medical Center where I specialize in medical facials and provide my clients with customized treatments that address each client’s specific skin care needs. Furthermore, I have developed my own line of skincare products, Skinilai, which ensure my clients achieve the results they desire. I turned 50 this year and I can proudly say that my skin is all natural and healthy. I give myself diverse types of anti-aging treatments and I use my own skincare products which contain active ingredients that strengthen the skin’s smooth appearance.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting my career as an esthetician, working full time to establish myself and being a full-time mom was a challenge. I was not going to compromise either in my career or my family, or favor one over the other, they were both my number one priority. I raised three boys and one required special needs which demanded a lot of energy and time. It wasn’t easy, it was a real struggle trying to balance everything and split my time between my boys and my work. I am so thankful for my loving husband who has always supported me on my journey. With his help and encouragement, I was able to push forward no matter the struggle.

Please tell us about Skinilai.
SkinIlai offers customized skincare treatments, hands-on consultations and a selection of skincare products. Each facial is individually tailored specifically for the client based upon their skin type and specific skin condition. There is no one cookie-cutter facial for all. I have taken the standard facial to a whole new level. My treatments are very personal and differ from one facial to another.

During each facial, I evaluate the skin and based on its current condition I use my knowledge and experience to create a unique formula that targets the specific needs of each skin type and issue. Your skin is unique, and it changes with the environment, lifestyle, food, stress levels and more. I adjust the concentration and type of products I use, the order of the method of the facial, the equipment and lastly the type of products for the client to use at home to prolong their facial experience.

I am well known for my special treatments and for improving the appearance of the worst and most challenging of skin conditions. I am proud to help and give my clients their desired results as well as others who seek me out after not finding a solution to their skin condition. I take pride that in one hour of treatment, I scan the skin, collect data and treat the skin accordingly. I personalize products in a precise manner for the type of skin and use all my knowledge and the expertise that I have gained in my years of working so that each client leaves my clinic with the optimal results for their skin type.

To compliment my treatments and help my clients maintain their facial and prevent future damage, I have developed my own line of products for skin care. My products are very exclusive and are not meant for mass production. Each product has its own treatment purpose to treat the skin conditions and give real results.

I am proud of all my accomplishments. I am not your average esthetician, this is not a job to me, this is a part of me. I continue to get educated with the newest techniques, equipment and products and I apply them all in my treatments. I love making a positive change on the skin and enjoy seeing my clients’ skin improve.

Nothing was handed to me, everything I achieved was done with diligence, persistence and lots of patience without any shortcuts – just years of learning. I have taken and continue to take numerous workshops, courses and seminars – all of which helped me become an expert in my field and be the best in my own eyes. My drive is myself, I don’t sideways to compare or compete with others, I am my own motivation.

Do you feel like our city is a good place for businesses like yours? If someone was just starting out, would you recommend them starting out here? If not, what can our city do to improve?
Our city is the perfect place for businesses like mine. The people who live here are the most highly aware of skincare I have seen anywhere. The best advice and recommendation I can give for any new esthetician starting out is to find a good mentor to learn from.

Only after years of experience, you can really know how to treat the skin, there are so many different skin types and skin conditions. The most important thing is not to cause damage to the skin if you are not sure don’t risk it. Always continue to expand your knowledge.
