Meet Huimin Zhang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Huimin Zhang.

Huimin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
At first, I majored in business management in undergraduate studies. In the first week of school, I got my first camera in my life. Since then, I have been keen on taking pictures and kept taking pictures of my friends. I even wanted to retake the college entrance examination to become an art student majoring in photography.

Later, I decided to study abroad for a master’s degree in photography. In 2016, I came to Los Angeles for photography in New York Film Academy, and gradually gained a systematic understanding of photography. In the past two years, I’ve found the themes that are of my most interest – street, intimacy, gender, and fashion.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
At the initial stage of my career, I don’t have stable clients so my income has to be relatively unstable. As a result, I always couldn’t afford the investment for my new projects and life expenses. Apart from that, I’m still struggling to find a strong and distinct personal style. However, being able to make a living by what I feel passionate about is already a great fortune of life that I am super grateful for.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I love the poetic quality of blurriness and I try to engage that into all my projects. My self-portrait is an example. One of my ongoing projects with this visual style is a collection of black and white, blurry, painting-like female portraits, which is called The Gap Between Us. In this project, I try to explore the dynamic beauty of female bodies as well as the complex intimacy between a photographer and a subject.

My works have been exhibited at Photoville in New York, Photo LA in Los Angeles and will be exhibited on Latitude in Italy this May.

Commercial wise, I shoot a wide range of subjects including CD covers, clothing brands, headshots, film stills, weddings, and other events. I recently also developed an interest in fashion and my first several fashion projects were all featured on Vogue Italia.

Thanks to my first camera, I was able to have a career that is completely motivated by passion and love.
