Meet Howie Goldklang of The Establishment Salon and Southpaw

Today we’d like to introduce you to Howie Goldklang.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My wife is a hairstylist and I am a writer. Neither of us wanted to work for other people anymore so we decided to merge our careers and open a salon in the Midwest. It is called The Establishment and it became wildly successful, Elle Magazine recently named it to the top 100 salons in the USA. We opened a second location in Los Angeles, it has been a great experience of growth and community. The men’s business grew so much so that we open up a barbershop in Silverlake too called Southpaw.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a small business is a lot of moving parts so there are struggles daily weekly and monthly but it is far outshined by the success of our staff and gratitude we have working in our industry.

The establishment Salon and Southpaw – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At The Establishment, we are known for our amazing hair color and for serving really strong coffee. Our barbershop Southpaw is known for being trend setting for men’s style. We stopped doing a lot of fades months ago and now the style forecasts are calling for a longer men’s hair which we’ve been doing! It’s really fun to challenge ourselves that way.
