Meet Holly Rothschild of String Theory in Venice

Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Rothschild.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Holly. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The company was started by Luke and Holly (that’s me!) Rothschild and cellist, Joseph Harvey in 2002. We were all working together in Chicago. I am a dancer/choreographer and my husband, Luke, is an instrument designer, composer, musician, and visual artist and Joey is a cellist/composer. We wanted to create an interdisciplinary ensemble that included large scale long string instruments and sonic sculpture that would bridge sound and movement. We moved to LA because we wanted a change and we also started scoring film projects and wanted to expand in that area, as well as in performance. We’ve been working in LA for a while now and continue to tour and write music. The ensemble consists of a group of musicians and dancers.

We find ourselves doing all sorts of interesting projects. We’ve performed at The Emmy’s, The Grammy’s, The Sundance Film Festival, The Ford Amphitheatre, The Miles Playhouse and last year, we worked with The Gothenburg Fringe Festival and the Opera Estrad to create an original opera at a pirate’s house in Gothenburg Sweden for the Fringe. Last year, we performed at Ellen’s 60th Birthday Bash. A lot of people don’t know this about us but we do a lot of customized performance installations for very private parties around LA and beyond. Luke and I also freelance in our disciplines. I do a lot of freelance choreography for film, video, dance commissions, etc… and Luke composes music for film and recently, he designed and built these large scale sound installations for The Chicago Children’s Museum.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course, in the beginning, it was difficult to get started in a new place. Otherwise, things have been pretty smooth. We work with a great group of talented people so even if the exterior of things are fluctuating, the dynamics of the group is solid. I have so much respect for everyone that I work with so I remain inspired and positive about the experience.

String Theory – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are primarily known for our large scale Harp installations that transform architecture and environments into giant stringed instruments. We are known for combining the disciplines of sound sculpture, original music, and contemporary dance. Our work spans from site-specific to traditional proscenium. We are also known for writing music for dance, theatre, and film.
