Meet Hila Plitmann

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hila Plitmann.

Hila, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
-I started playing piano at 6 and singing in choirs since I was 10.
-LOVED music from the verystart – I’d re-enact musicals on the dining room table for hours when I was a kid
-My first professional gig the role of Flora, the little girl in ‘Turn the f the Screw’ a Benjamin Britten opera. It was with the Israeli Opera, and I was 14. After that I was hooked.

-I’ve been singing professionally ever since: Did my BM and MM studies at The Juilliard School in New York, then moved out to LA which is my true home!

-Won a GRAMMY for ‘Best Vocal Performance’ I’m 2008, for an wonderful piece by great American Composer, John Corigliano. It a cycle titled ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ whereby he took poems from Bob Dylan songs and composed them classically for soprano and orchestra. A very powerful work!

Im an ctress and singer-songwriter as well. I do a lot of contemporary classical music, premiering many new works, and have had the pleasure of singing for film soundtracks on occasion. I am now in the process of making an album of original cross-over material.

And I’m teaching more and more – I love it! I learn so much from it, and feel that I have something to give.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
-Connecting with the core of self-love and kindness throughout the incredible rollercoaster of this life and career. That is the main thing that keeps unfolding for me on this journey

-Also, balancing motherhood and personal life with the source of creativity. They go hand in hand, they just need to keep building hat bridge between them.

-Growing and learning from rejection. That’s a lifelong lesson for me. Discovering more I depth through the years that it’s not about  developing defenses and a thicker skin, but that it’s actually about opening up even further to the world and it’s beauty and not being afraid of anything it wants to give you and teach you.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
In the classical world, I am known to learn difficult music rather quickly and connect to a deepness of meaning. To me it feels like a whole lot of hard practicing… I get called to premiere lots of new pieces. I am also very physical in my art, incorporating much in the way of movement and dance into performances that call for it.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I am in love with our beautiful city. There is a dream quality here that permeates the air. There is so much happening and so much imagination and creativity just spilling out from every inch of it.

My advice towards others and myself these days is to just start doing things, even if they seem silly or not quite stitched to you perfectly. If it really doesn’t work, then it might make you laugh, and if does then it may carry you onto a new adventure!
