Meet Highland Park Photographer: Jordana Sheara

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordana Sheara.

Jordana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m LA native, raised by a father from South America, and a Mother from Western Europe. I grew up very curious, and luckily, my father had the patience to answer my endless flow of questions. They both had adventurous and exciting lives, so I always assumed my life would be the same. I think that influenced my wanderlust and need to see every what’s around every dark corner. When I found photography in high school, it gave me an outlet for this part of myself that I needed to let out. I fell in love with light and composition, and the dialogue a still image creates. I studied at Art Center College of Design, and have been learning and hustling since then.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing good is ever a smooth road! I finished Art school in 2009, just in time for the economy crash, and there was no work for me! I lucked out and got a job as the assistant for the staff photographer of Sunset Magazine at the time, and learned a lot working for her. Since going completely freelance a few years ago, it has been an amazing experience. I am finding my inspirations and my voice have become much clearer. I know that my aesthetic runs through any project I’m shooting, be it travel, portraiture, fashion, or even food. It’s taken years, but with each project, I feel myself stronger in my voice and my ability as a photographer.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and career?
Luck is an interesting concept to me. I feel lucky to have family and friends who have been extremely supportive in me, my talent, and my life choices. I also feel lucky for living how I do, with the luxury of living in a world where I can pursue my dreams. But, while I do believe in being at the right place at the right time and how it can change anyone’s life, I think what someone does with said opportunity is much more important than luck. I’ve had good luck, and bad luck in my career, just like anyone. I just try to work hard and make the best of whatever situation I find myself in.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think tenacity is so important in a career in photography. There are so many great talented photographers out there, and the industry is in bad shape. It’s been such a great lesson in persistence and determination. If you don’t give up, eventually, something great will happen.

Tell us about your favorite and least favorites things about our city.
Los Angeles is an incredible city, filled with all walks of life. I love that even though I’m LA native, I still constantly find new places, people, and experiences here. I love that I can go to the beach, desert, or mountains in the same day. I love that no matter who you are, or what your interests are, there is a community for you somewhere in LA. I’d say my least favorite things about this city are the drastic increases of the cost of life here happening lately. LA is so expensive that it’s pushing out all of the different cultures and artists that make this city what it is. It’s terrible how many beautiful establishments and homes are getting destroyed for chain stores, malls, or designer lofts. It’s ruining what little history we have here.
