Meet Hien Luong of West Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hien Luong.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My younger brother Khang and I grew up loving cars from a young age. Growing up in the early 2000s we were exposed to all the different racing films and racing video games such as Fast and Furious and Need For Speed. Our passion for cars and racing stemmed from this and only progressed as we grew up.

We started off taking pictures and attending car meets far before the era of social media. Our father was huge into photography and helped show us how to fully use one. From that point on we knew it was only a matter of time that we combined our 2 favorite passions together. Once sites like Instagram and Facebook became popular, we always knew we wanted to capture the side of LA that we grew up with; the side of LA that most people only see in movies.

So in 2018 we started Motor City Mayhem with the intention of showcasing car culture in all of its aspects. From car meets to professionally sanctioned events to underground racing culture, we wanted to document it all.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest struggle was trying to find the right niche to fit into and trying to build an audience for it. Car photography and content creation isn’t anything new, but we wanted to do something that stood out. We eventually found our niche in trying to showcase the underground world of cars and car culture combined with the Southern California aesthetic. We wanted our content to invoke the same feelings in viewers that old racing video games and movies used to invoke in us.

Every weekend we’d be out past midnight rolling with various different car clubs and car crews trying to capture the aura and vibe that we wanted to present to the world. It was truly a long arduous process, but it was worth it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Surprisingly, my brother Khang and I work in two very opposite fields that do not have any ties to the world of cars and content creation.

I work as a healthcare provider and Khang works in the federal sector. We love what we do, but the car and car content creation was more of a hobby turned side gig.

I am proud to say that I help people on a daily basis and Khang is happy to say that he does the same. We get to contribute our fair share to society while still maintaining the time to do what we want in regard to our automotive passion.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I believe that charisma is the most important to success in any field. In the early days of Motor City Mayhem, we had to reach out and network with others to build a solid footing before we could gain an audience. In fact, it’s still something that we have to continue to maintain. Branching out, meeting like-minded individuals to collaborate and drive our page forward.
