Meet Long Beach Nail Artist: Sheila Monaus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheila Monaus.

Sheila graduated from Career Academy of Beauty and has been a manicurist for over 5 years. She formerly worked at Kreme de la Kreme Nail Lounge before renting out a private room in Ambiance Skin Care. Sheila has also done freelance work outside of the salon for several magazines, television shows and red carpet events. Over the 5 years as a nail tech, she strives to understand and learn more about the health and art of nails by taking additional classes.

Below you’ll find edited excerpts of our interview with Sheila.

Has it been a smooth road?

My biggest milestone was leaving the nail salon I worked at for 3 years and go out on my own. Very scary because I didn’t know if all my clients would follow me and if I would be able to grow my business. But it turned out to be one of the best decisions for me.

What are your plans for the future?
My future plans within the next year to year and a half is to open up a salon that offers quality service in a comfortable and clean environment. That doesn’t seem like a lot to ask for, however those simple things are hard to find in many nail salons. I believe more and more women are looking for nail salons that provides pampering, but that they can also to trust sterilize their tools and provide high quality products. Unfortunately lots of these chop shops are giving the industry a bad name, and I’d like to see that change.

Let’s dig a little deeper into your story.  What was the hardest time you’ve had?

The hardest period of my life is when I was fired from my management job, but I deserved it! I didn’t love my job anymore, however it provided stability and security for me and my son. It was then I decided to go out on a limb and get into the beauty industry. Nails seemed like the natural route for me and I haven’t looked back since! Not only do I have some amazing clients, but I’m a freelance artist also. I’ve been in some of the most beautiful homes up and down the Southern California coast. I’ve been on set for photo shoots and tv shows, and got to work with some of the biggest names in the beauty industry. It has been a good journey so far and I can’t wait to see what’s around the next corner.

Such an inspiring story! People tend to settle down with a job which isn’t right for them but provides income. The career of a nail technician can be very rewarding and creative.
