Today we’d like to introduce you to Henry Thompson Jr.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Henry. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My interest in photography started with me traveling around the world and wanting to capture those special moments so I could revisit them at a later time and share them with others. I received some great feedback from coworkers, friends, and family saw my photos and were amazed at how I structured the items and people in my photos. My work with photos became well known around my office that I gained the privilege to work with our media department as their main technical support specialist. This position provided me my first exposure to more advanced photography and video equipment as well as the editing software that they used to finalize any projects.
After being laid-off from my computer engineering job; I decided to join the photography field because it gave me the opportunity to express my creative side and at the same time, giving me the ability to provide other people a way to capture and cherish their special moments for their continue viewing as well as for their generations to come.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Changing careers is never easy; becoming a freelance photographer especially in Southern California is what most people will say is just crazy. I went from making $103,000 as a computer engineer to less than $5,000 my first year and my second and third year was just slightly better than the prior. Even now I am nowhere close to the amount of money I was making as a computer engineer, but I am extremely happy and have and have a strong sense of fulfillment. Being raised in a Southern Family, I was taught that success comes from not how much you have in your bank account but how many lives you have touched in a positive manner.
Another major obstacle that I had to face was the simple fact as to how saturated the photography field really is as well as how many poor quality photographers are out here giving us well trained and professional photographers a bad name. What I have noticed is that most photographers don’t understand there are three main steps that go into great photography work. Photography starts before the first click of the camera with obtaining a clear vision as to what your client wants, and expects; continues with providing top customer service during the shoot and ends with providing the finished product to the client in a timely manner and provide follow up to ensure client satisfaction.
Please tell us about Still Moments Photography.
Still Moments Photography is an American Veteran owned small business with its main purpose is to provide our clients with the best customer experience possible at every photography encounter. To work closely with our clients to gain an understanding of their expectations and to work with them to make it a reality. Going above and beyond our client’s expectations when it comes to customer service is what Still Moments is very well known for and is the main item that sets us apart from the rest.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I could do everything again, I don’t think that I would do anything differently because the journey itself has been and continue to be one both full of excitement as well as a learning experience.
