Meet Dr. Henry Chen of Dr. Chen’s Acupuncture & Wellness Center in Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Henry Chen.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was young, I experienced severe chronic allergies. My parents took me to see several specialists and they gave my parents a 15-page report of everything that I was allergic to. The 15-page report basically included everything under the sun. The western medical solution was to give me a painful allergy shot of everything that I was allergic to on a weekly basis. I received these shots for one year. Unfortunately, my allergies did not get any better and I continued to feel fatigued and constantly had allergy flareups.

Growing up, I have always been around acupuncture and Chinese medicine, but when I was a child, I was afraid of acupuncture needles and disliked the taste of Chinese herbal medicine. (Technology, wasn’t as good back then. Nowadays we have herbal capsules that make life easier for my patients.) After a year of failed painful allergy shots, my parents decided to go back to our roots and use acupuncture and Chinese medicine.

After a couple weeks of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, I felt better than I had in a long time. I could breathe normally again, I had much more energy and I slept a lot better. I continued to get acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine for about six months and I could honestly say that after those six months I rarely got allergy flare-ups anymore.

Before I got my Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, I worked as a Buyer for my parent’s health-food store and as a personal trainer. I believe in healthy living and holistic medicine. I recognize that our culture in medicine is to prescribe a pill or get surgery for most ailments. I do not believe this is a good solution. To help as many people as possible, I decided to get my Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine has the power to treat the root cause of many diseases and I am inspired to share this holistic medicine to as many people as possible. What a lot of people don’t know is that in California, Acupuncturist can be primary care providers. My long-term goal is to make acupuncture mainstream and the first medicine that people choose.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have been very fortunate that I did not have many obstacles to get to where I am at today. Besides having to pay for school, the road has been quite smooth. I think this is due to my philosophy of “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” And I have only planned for success. I don’t think there are too many “real” obstacles in life, just choices. As they say, life is 10% is what happens and 90% how you react to it.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Dr. Chen’s Acupuncture & Wellness Center – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We strive to provide exceptional natural health care utilizing acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. We specialize in integrative pain management. Many of my patients have turned to acupuncture and Chinese medicine as a last resort and find that it very often demonstrates the best results. We integrate traditional and modern acupuncture techniques for the effective treatment of pain, musculoskeletal disorders, and many other health conditions. Our wellness center has performed thousands of acupuncture procedures, and our patients include everyone from housewives and doctors to professional and amateur athletes.

What sets me apart from other acupuncturists, is the type of acupuncture that I practice which is called Master Tung acupuncture. Master Tung Acupuncture is an advanced system of acupuncture that produces instant pain relief. Tung style acupuncture varies widely from the typical treatments one receives in the United States, and the results are much more effective and sustainable. This style of acupuncture is very effective for some of the more difficult conditions which are resistant to other types of treatment.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I want to help as many people as I can with the big picture goal of making acupuncture and herbal medicine the mainstream choice for medicine.
