Today we’d like to introduce you to Helen Hodgson.
The best-selling author, has more than 25 years’ experience as a Registered Nurse and personal fitness trainer and has been licensed massage therapist since 1995. She founded Serve The Goddess® Mobile Spa Services & Retreats in 2000 after working for many prestigious salons and spas in Beverly Hills, California and in private practice. Helen also leads Women’s Transformational Weekend Retreats throughout Southern California and Couple’s Retreats
She learned from years of watching her mother – a registered nurse and mother of five – that as caretakers, we women, are often the last ones to nurture ourselves! After Helen’s own experience of exhaustion from over-giving that led to days spent recovering in bed, Serve The Goddess® was born. She became an advocate for empowering women to practice extreme self-care and self-love using the ancient wisdom of the goddesses.
Check out her latest book, Couple’s Massage Handbook: Deepen Your Relationship with the Healing Power of Touch. Helen believes that through touch, couples can achieve a higher state of emotional intimacy.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Going from being an individual massage therapist to building the Serve the Goddess Empire took over 10 years.
After years of practicing solo to creating what is now, an empire, had its challenges. First I had to build a team of professionals and train them in a way that would represent my high standards and core beliefs. Making sure my staff shares the same high standards is key, and I consider myself fortunate to have attracted a stellar network of massage therapists and spa staff. I created a rigorous protocol and training manual and my assistant oversees the daily running of the business. A constant challenge is to work on the business, creating new ideas and not in the day-to-day running of the business.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Serve The Goddess story. Tell us more about the business.
Serve The Goddess provides mobile massage + spa services in our client’s homes, offices, special events and transformational weekend retreats. We save our clients time and energy of driving to and from the spa by bringing the spa to them. Serve The Goddess was one of the very first spas in the country to offer mobile services back in 2000. We are best known for treating our clients like goddesses, hence our company name. I use the ancient wisdom of the goddesses to inspire women to practice extreme self-care and self-love. This theme is what sets me apart from our mobile spa owners.
I believe every woman is born with a big, radiant mission. She may be a mother + homemaker, a visionary & artist, a nurse, a therapist or in any service capacity … or even a corporate CEO. And no matter what form her mission takes, she is worthy of love, reverence, time for self-reflection and deep relaxation. To be immersed in her own remarkable & unique essence. We’re all worthy of self-love and reverence.
So often in my work as a mobile spa owner and director, I see intelligent, loving and deserving women who are at their breaking point: many have crashed and burned before they even consider scheduling just one hour to themselves! The imbalances of a stressful life are felt throughout the whole being––body, mind and spirit. Our culture glorifies being “busy” and doing-ness. This just feels and sounds harsh to me. When a woman uses busyness as an excuse to put aside her own precious needs and desires, it saddens me. Deeply.
I created my transformational retreats just for these women.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe luck is being prepared so that when an opportunity represents itself you can say, “yes, I can do that.”
