Helen, can you walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Hi, my name is Helen Asuncion. I came to professional matchmaking and date coaching from a twenty-year career as a private educational consultant. Educational consulting involves working with families on a very personal level – you are in their homes assessing the child’s personality, family dynamic, even their budget and schedules. When clients put their trust in me and give me access to their private lives, that’s a privilege that I don’t take lightly.
In 2019, I decided to pivot away from the education field. I found that my experience translated very easily to matchmaking, and the work is just as rewarding. In school, sometimes students get so caught up in getting good grades. They need the reminder that the point is ultimately to become a good candidate for a paying career, in a field you want to work in. In the same way, a lot of singles think that dating is about being willing to be on dating apps and text/meet with strangers. But the point is really to find your forever person and start building a life and family together. So I’m still out here helping people “understand the assignment.”
Please tell us more about your brand, Good Hearts Meet
My business is Good Hearts Meet. My focus is on helping Christian singles meet and marry. This can be especially hard if you love your church, but there are no singles in your congregation. Or sometimes there is a large holding tank of singles because approaching someone you’re interested in is awkward or taboo. My service helps churches fill this need within the Christian community.
May Bugenhagen and Two Asian Matchmakers have been great to us and I know you’ve got a great relationship with them as well. Maybe you can tell our audience a bit about May Bugenhagen and Two Asian Matchmakers and your experience with them.
I have followed May’s work since her original speed-dating events in Los Angeles, many years ago. I reached out to her after working at another national matchmaking company for a number of years. It was great timing because she was in the process of developing her Asian Matchmaking Certification program. I have the distinct privilege and honor of being her first graduate. May is a veteran in the field and the knowledge she shares with me is invaluable.
What I love and admire most about May is her no-nonsense communication style. She has so much experience working with super high value men and women; she’s got this disarmingly direct but also totally classy way of just giving it to you straight. And she’s very confident in her recommendations because she has seen them work.
Matchmakers are the gatekeepers in a boutique dating experience. We decide who gets in and who doesn’t. The opposite of that is an online dating app, where everyone can see you, screenshot you, reach out and affect your day. For a really interesting experiment, try setting your filters to a really optimal height and education level. What you will often find is that the quality of choices actually goes down (something you probably didn’t think was possible). This is because so many people lie to game the system. Matchmakers are human lie detectors and filters. When I send one of my singles out on a date with another matchmaker’s client, I’m trusting in that matchmaker’s high standards and good judgment, and vice versa.
