Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Morrow.
Heather, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
You really never know what life is going to throw at you and, unfortunately, I lost my first husband to an inoperable brain tumor in my early 30s. In one of the cancer support groups we were attending, we took a course called painting your way to wellness. Although my husband was not physically able to paint, he seemed to enjoy watching me paint. After he passed, I found great solace in oil painting.
After a few years, a friend taking the painting workshops with me suggested that we take a ceramic class. Once I touched clay, I was hooked! I joined a member studio for 11 years and six years ago turned my garage into a studio.
I wheel throw and hand build functional ware and unique jewelry pendants for your everyday life. During the pandemic, I started throwing smaller with 4″ sweetheart vases. Then I went even smaller, throwing miniature vases and bowls on a miniature wheel.
During the second year of the pandemic, I started taking photography classes to re-enforce the photography skills I learned in high school and learn how to really leverage the digital format to create works of art.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
A story is not that interesting, without the twists and turns. As noted in the last question, the loss of my first husband had a significant impact on my creative life. It also changed the trajectory of my career. What was just a job between TV writing gigs has turned into a very stable career supporting the legal technology industry.
His death changed who I was down to my very core. My current husband says he wishes he had met me in his 20s before his first marriage and I explain that I was someone completely different.
Speaking of my current husband, we met using Tinder. I swiped right and then he swiped right, and we just clicked. He has a great sense of humor and is so supportive of my continued exploration of my creative soul.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Although I believe it is good to learn from others, I also like paving my own creative path. I like to try new things and not be limited or known for one thing.
For instance, I prefer throwing Nara Porcelain; however, I am willing to try different clay bodies, glaze or techniques to get a new result.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I have done commissions in the past; however, those requesting an item should have a lot of patience. Now having my own studio, it takes a while to make enough to fill the kiln.
My ceramics can be found at www.potterydaily.com and there is a link to my Etsy page. Probably the best way to follow me and my ceramics is on IG @potterydaily. My ceramics can be found in person @BirdDogArts gallery at the Tejon Outlet Mall. It’s a fantastic gallery with wonderful artists from all over California.
I am getting ready to officially launch my photography website (www.heathercmorrowphotography.com) in the next few weeks. My IG is @ascapturedbyheather.
One thing that is consistent with all of my creative pursuits in the need to market new products and upcoming events.
