Meet Heather Brown of Brown & Co Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Brown.

Heather, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hi! I’m Heather – wife and boy mama of two! I always start there because like so many women, that’s where a lot of my drive comes from, my family! I’m the definition of a Mom-preneur. Supporting my family in an unconventional way by pursuing my creative passion!

I lost someone close to me and as an outlet, I started lettering as a hobby and just for some ME time. I would look at calligraphers on Instagram nightly and think “WOW! How amazing is it to create such beautiful things for people’s most special days?!”

In a search to perfect my own craft, I noticed that LA and Orange County had tons of creative workshops available to all the DIY-ers! Ventura County, where I’m based, had zero options for Calligraphy workshops. I decided I’d take a shot at hosting a class to fill the gap. I truly had no idea what I was doing but I created a workbook, purchased supplies, contacted a local brewery that agreed to let me host, posted the class to Instagram and sold out in just a couple days!  Since taking that chance last January, I have hosted over 50 workshops! I still can’t believe what I’ve been able to accomplish.

Throughout all of this, I was working in the dental field and in October 2017, I decided to take the plunge and become a full-time Calligrapher.  It’s terrifying and amazing all at the same time. I find so much joy in sharing my skill with others, never fearing it as creating competition, but looking at it as a way to give back by igniting creative sparks in others and connecting with my community.  It’s cliché and has been said so many times but if you are doing what you love, it’s not work. I hope I can inspire other women to pursue their dreams!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think the struggle is SO real for all makers! Putting yourself and your art out there to be judged, loved, hated or copied. It takes a positive outlook and thick skin! I think that’s my biggest challenge, not letting social media get the best of me! it’s a ton of pressure to keep up and hard not to compare my journey to others in the industry.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Brown & Co Designs – what should we know?
Brown & Co Designs is a calligraphy and design small business operating out of Ventura, CA. We specialize in custom signage and backdrop builds and Modern Calligraphy workshops.

Bringing creative workshops to Ventura County has been so rewarding, I’d say that’s what we are known for and I’m thrilled to be Ventura’s lettering lady! Nothing makes me more proud than sharing my skill with others and seeing them create their own hand-lettered pieces afterwards. I’ve received countless messages from “students” with photos of signage they made for loved one’s events, it fills me with gratitude. I get asked often if I get worried teaching others my craft, my answer is NO. I see us as a group of calligraphy friends making this community a more beautiful place! I can’t do it all by my self!

I think what sets us apart from other calligraphy businesses, is the “why”. My why is a long drawn out one, but I always dreamt of living a more free and happy life. Calligraphy has ever so randomly brought that to me! And I think that reflects in our work!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My husband has been my number one supporter. He’s the reason behind the name “Brown & Co”, he’s Mr. Brown and I’m the Co! Working behind the scenes but this business could not operate without his skills! He’s my general contractor building all the signs that go out! He still helps me with a smile on his face and tells me all the time how proud he is I “went for it”.

Calligraphy has introduced many new friends! One of them being Cynthia Alexander (Cynthia Alexander Events). She’s one of those new friends that feel like they’ve been there for years! She happens to be an incredibly talented Event Designer. She’s a constant support and Mentor. I’d be lost without her!
