Meet Hazar Bayindir

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hazar Bayindir.

Hi Hazar, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As a Los Angeles-based creative director, designer, and photographer, I have a wealth of experience in various creative disciplines. My career began in the early 2000s in Istanbul, Turkey, where I honed my skills in interactive web design, branding, and entertainment marketing. My multifaceted skill set centers around an extensive knowledge of contemporary media and style, which I have been able to apply in a wide range of projects throughout my career.

In addition to my solo work, I also regularly collaborate with a vast network of agencies, serving as creative director on branding, interactive and entertainment marketing projects. I am experienced in managing large and diverse teams and I am able to bring a unique perspective to each project I work on.

My background in journalism led me to study Journalism in my undergraduate. But I never wanted to become a journalist, instead I started designing as a hobby. I graduated my journalism degree in 2003 and by then I got good at design, so I started working at agencies as a designer in Istanbul. In 2004, I moved to Los Angeles to study English. Three years later I started a Master in Arts, focus on design Program at CSULA.

I hold a Master of Arts in Design from CSULA and I am a proud member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), which has helped me to stay up to date with the latest trends and techniques in the industry.

I have also been recognized for my work and got Clio Awards for Netflix is a Joke Campaign.

Some of the notable projects I have worked on include: Netflix, NASA/JPL, HBO, The Academy/Oscars, Verizon, Universal Studios, 20th Century Fox, Philips, Amtrak, Ubisoft, Pressed Juicery, Focus Creative, BBC, MGM Resorts, Sony Pictures, A24, Food Network, Warner Bros., Mattel, Benjamin Moore and Genting.

In my personal life, I am a proud owner of a boxer dog named Ringo and I am a vegetarian. I enjoy photography and I am passionate about traveling and experiencing different cultures. I believe that my diverse background and experiences give me a unique perspective and ability to bring fresh ideas to every project I work on.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As an immigrant, it has not been a smooth road. I have faced prejudice and discrimination along the way. In particular, while working in the agency scene and starting my own companies, I have encountered people who were not fully supportive of my capabilities due to my status as an immigrant. Additionally, I have found that learning the ways and culture of the country I immigrated to takes time and can be challenging. Despite these struggles, I have persevered and continue to work hard to achieve my goals. And that is the only way to do it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a graphic designer, I have been honing my skills for nearly 25 years. I began my journey as a self-taught web designer in the year 2000 and have since expanded my knowledge and capabilities to include various aspects of graphic design. I have always known that this is the field I want to pursue, and even when I faced challenges such as moving to a new country and starting over, my passion for design never wavered.

I am known for my strong design sense and ability to approach a project from a 360-degree perspective. I am versatile in my skillset and can take on a wide range of projects, whether it be branding or entertainment related. One of my proudest accomplishments is my expertise in typography and my ability to quickly identify and name most fonts. Additionally, I have a keen problem-solving skills when it comes to visual language, which allows me to anticipate and address potential issues before they arise.

How do you think about happiness?
I am constantly striving to improve myself and expand my knowledge, both within and beyond my field of work. Additionally, I find great fulfillment in mentoring and imparting my knowledge to up-and-coming designers, as I believe that personal growth and happiness can only be truly achieved when shared with others.
