Today we’d like to introduce you to Harry Mullen.
Harry, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been working in the medical field since 1984 when I started as a medic in the US Navy. When I was released from service, I started working for Kaiser Permanente as a sterile processing technician. I worked to receive 3 certifications in my field and was eventually promoted to a manager.
It did not take time at all to realize that companies were taking advantage of students monetarily as well as they did not serve them well to help the students pass the certification exam.
I started CSS as a way to educate students to give them the best opportunity to pass the exam as well as prepare them for the interview process.
Other schools have a 65% pass rate and charge well over $10,000 for their course.
It did not take us long to achieve a 90 to 95% pass rate and we would only charge a third of what others would charge.
We not only teach in the LA area, we have expanded to the Inland Empire as well.
In 2015, we started consulting with hospitals in order to help them with accreditation as well as bring best practice in order to help lower infection rates.
We hope to expand in the near future in order to serve the local hospitals as well as individuals attain their goals.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
With any venture, there are ups and downs. The initial cost of doing business in order to gain recognition was a challenge. Starting a business in the middle of a recession in some cases is prohibitive, but our success has grown though word of mouth mainly because of the success our student has had.
The best way to stay in business is to minimize cost and prevent ourselves from going into heavy debt.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Central Sterilization Solutions – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We educate individuals and prepare them for the sterile processing field. This is an area in the hospital responsible for cleaning and sterilization surgical instruments for the hospital. Our course is meant to help prepare the students to sit for an exam so they may achieve their goal of certification in this field.
What sets us apart from others is our high pass rate as well as the tools we give the students so they are ready for the job interview.
We also consult with hospitals that are having difficulty passing their accreditation in order to preserve their ability to collect from Medicare and Medicaid. This is very important for the institution. Without the ability to collect these payments, they soon find themselves faced with having to close their doors to the public.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We currently utilize hospital conference rooms and community centers in order to hold classes. Once the student has passed the course we send them out to local hospitals to do their internship.
Our goal is to eventually have our own permanent location to not only hold classes but to also have our own hands on training facility so the students may learn the tools of the trade prior to venturing into their chosen field.
We want it to be in a central location so we are accessible to the LA, OC and Inland Empire counties.
