Today we’d like to introduce you to Hanson Ma.
Hi Hanson, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for creativity and have explored it through various mediums since childhood. From designing yearbooks and sports photography to video editing and VFX, I’ve enjoyed the process of creating something unique and valuable for others.
I’m currently a senior studying graphic design with a focus on branding, packaging, and motion design at ArtCenter College of Design. Last summer, I had the opportunity to intern at INDUSTRY, a creative agency based in Portland, Oregon. It was an honor to work with talented professionals and contribute to projects for big brands like Nike, Lego, and MLS. I’m grateful for the experiences and opportunities that have helped shape me as a designer.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
My creative journey has been filled with numerous obstacles and challenges. As a packaging and motion design student at ArtCenter, I have faced a unique set of difficulties, given that most designers typically specialize in a single field. However, I have always been drawn to working with multiple mediums simultaneously, which has allowed me to expand my skill set and approach design from a more holistic perspective.
Like many design students, I have experienced the demanding nature of this profession. Design requires countless hours of hard work, late nights, and plenty of trial and error. Throughout my journey, I have learned the importance of giving every project my all and striving for excellence in everything I do. This often involves stepping outside of my comfort zone, learning new programs and techniques, and pushing myself to new limits. Ultimately, I believe that the hard work and dedication I put into my projects are well worth it, as they enable me to achieve my desired outcomes and produce work that truly makes an impact.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a senior at ArtCenter College of Design in the graphic design major. I am a brand designer with an emphasis in packaging and motion design.
Some may know me as the designer who often uses Blender, a 3D modeling and rendering software. In my opinion, Blender is an excellent tool for any creative professional, as it is user-friendly and has the ability to elevate and speed up any design workflow.
With a background in both packaging and motion design, I have developed a multidisciplinary skill set that allows me to approach design from various angles. I am not only proficient in traditional 2D design but also have a unique perspective in the realm of 3D. This has given me the ability to visualize designs both digitally and physically and work spatially in scale. I am grateful for the opportunities that have allowed me to cultivate my skills and explore different mediums in the creative field.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I am grateful to have had the guidance and support of several professors who have played a significant role in shaping my creative journey. I want to express my deep appreciation to Gerardo Herrera, Ming Tai, Miguel Lee, Tracy Shiffman, Cheri Gray, Monica Schlaug, Daniel Hoy, and many others for sharing their knowledge and expertise with me. Their mentorship and encouragement have been invaluable to my growth as a designer.
