Today we’d like to introduce you to Hans Kohler.
Hi Hans, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am originally from Brazil, from a city close to Rio de Janeiro. In 2009 I came to the US to do International Relations at University of Southern California, where I eventually found out about Conflict Resolution in a persuasion class. After that, I went to Columbia University to do my Masters in Science of Negotiation and Conflict Resolution.
Now, I am a Conflict Resolution Specialist in Los Angeles, CA. I have used Effective Communication strategies together with Emotional Intelligence theory to improve Interpersonal Interactions, whether in the workplace or in one’s personal life. Hence, as an expert in Interpersonal Relationships, in conflict I use techniques based on Theoretical exercises and Practical Strategies through coaching and facilitation in order to resolve conflicts and keep healthy relationships through constructive strategies.
As a Conflict Coach, I have accomplished to help others to help themselves through counseling and creative strategies, in which have been extremely useful into assisting people to repair and build strong relationships, especially trust. As well have coached people into making the decisions they want to make through guidance and reflection, either personal, financial, or career-related.
My experience as Ombuds and Mediator has been vastly on workplace issues, such as employee/employer – Where it could range from pay raise, harassment, lack of motivation, to gender and systemic issues. Furthermore, Mediating between families and spouses have been another focus of mine due to my training in team facilitation and trust-building. I have been mediating at the Los Angeles Superior Court for the past five years, and volunteering at the Institute of Non Violence in Los Angeles.
I am able to practice important methods of Individual Session as much as group facilitations, which was invaluable for my growth as an Ombudsperson and Mediator. Where I use those skills with private clients and families, which is a very unique approach, since those are usually used on the organizational fields.
At this moment, I am assisting private clients such as individuals, couples, and families with conflict coaching, also I work with 500+ clients in recovery yearly, Mediation and Ombuds Contractor with several organizations and corporations. Between those companies, many Fortune 500 companies as well.
Lastly, I have lived in five different countries, I speak six languages, only five now fluently since I cannot practice as much.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There have been a lot of struggles in my life, besides having a lot of trauma when I was young, when I came to the US, I was often facing potential issues with staying here legally. Even though I was always legal in the US with a student visa, it was never guaranteed that I would be able to stay after my visa and education would be over.
Many times, I was applying for jobs, and they wanted me to work for them, however they couldn’t accept me because they would have to sponsor a visa in order for me to stay in the US, and many companies do not want to do that, or have the capacity to do it. Therefore, there was an often fear of me needing to go back to Brazil which has not been my home for a long time. Thankfully I was able to find someone that loved my skills and saw how valuable it could be for their company and eventually sponsored me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Conflict Resolution Specialists LLC?
Knowing a Conflict Resolution Specialist is not common, yet we all have conflicts almost in a daily basis. We all need to learn more conflict resolution to build trust and create better healthy relationships, and I would go further to say to have peace of mind.
When I am working with couples or families, it is quite interesting because I am usually focus on the data they give me and then I’m able to create concrete strategies for them to do, which differs from what therapists do. I love working with families because there’s usually so many dysfunctions, and the lack of education how to be a healthy family system is very challenging for most, and I’m often analyzing all the aspects of their lives, I usually am taking more well-rounded approach. Many times as well I work with the family’s therapist to have more insight on them.
One thing that I am very proud of and extremely skilled on is dealing with codependency, where I’m often assisting clients to stop having a toxic codependent relationship into a more healthy relationship. It is probably one of the most challenging things that I notice with my clients, while one of the most common entirely. Then, I am focusing often on how to better people into their best version of themselves.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t think luck has a lot to do with my business and my life, I have created a lot of opportunities to express my skills and I believe that there were a few times that the right people were in the room. If that would be luck, I guess I would say that I was lucky to have the right people around me when I was looking for developing my work. I have worked tirelessly to achieve things that I do, and I believe that my intentions being pure and aligned with my purpose have helped me to get where I am. I do have to say that I have been lucky to have had incredible people willing to better themselves working with me, that was very rewarding and motivating.
