Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah True.
Hannah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was originally introduced to balloon twisting in summer 2012. I joined an organization called the Volunteer Clowns of Orange County (VCOC) where we dress as clowns and go to various charity events for children with autism, burn victims, foster children and many others. I taught myself how to make balloon animals for these events. I instantly fell in love with making balloons and loved how it made everyone so happy. I would always get asked for a business card but wasn’t ready to start a business. My mom has always encouraged me to start a business, so after six years of volunteer balloon twisting, I finally decided to go for it. I’m still an active volunteer and plan to continue volunteering for as long as I’m able to.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve been extremely fortunate and have the best customers. They’re the ones who push me out of my comfort zone. I hate saying no to people, so I’m constantly challenging myself to come up with ideas to help execute a vision. If anything, I’m often underestimated since I’m so young and people automatically assume I don’t know what I’m doing. I choose to view this as a strength rather than a weakness, though; being underestimated is quite powerful.
Please tell us about Bonkerz 4 Balloons.
Bonkerz 4 Balloons was created in May 2018. We specialize in balloon twisting and balloon décor; basically, anything with balloons! We can make anything ranging from a simple balloon dog to wearable art, including one-of-a-kind balloon dresses and costumes! I’m most proud of what we can accomplish with a simple balloon and a little air. Balloons are not given enough credit. They break language barriers and bring people together. Sometimes I don’t speak the same language as the person I hand the balloon to, but we both immediately light up. A smile is the same in every language and balloons have the unique ability to connect people; this is what sets us apart. We aren’t just making balloons to make balloons; we’re on a mission to make a difference by spreading smiles from “air” to “air.” Many of us overlook the power of a balloon. Not only am I happy when I make a balloon but so is the person I hand the balloon to. I get to have fun for a living and make people happy-how cool is that?
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Absolutely nothing–I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished and would not change a thing!
