Meet Hannah Rose Sesser of Rose Magazine in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Rose Sesser.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I first moved to Los Angeles from Denver almost three years ago, I didn’t really know why I was moving, or for what, all I knew was I wanted change in my life.

I’ve always been into the arts doing musicals, plays, dancing, etc… But when I moved I didn’t know anyone and wanted to meet like-minded people while creating art. So I decided to take my hobby of photography and become serious about it. I started to meet so many great people and created fun art.

But slowly the fire for photography and art started to go out. I felt like I was in a funk and I didn’t know how to get out of this creative rut. I started to question why I was doing the art I was doing and honestly I didn’t have a good answer. So I started to look at the films, music, photography, and art that I love, to see what I love about them.

I began to realize the art I admire is the art that breaks social stigmas, portrays real people, and explores the human experience. (all things I felt like my art was lacking) During this whole creative rut I felt like the world was going to sh*t and I strongly believe “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”

That is a Desmond Tutu quote, if I’m being honest, I don’t know much about him I just remember hearing that quote as a kid. So I started to think ‘how do I make art I believe in while also taking a stand against the injustice around me?’ Thus my idea for Rose Magazine.

My goal for this publication is to start creating the artistic work I want, give great artists a platform to be seen and compensated for their work, and give back to causes I believe are doing great work.

Has it been a smooth road?
My biggest struggle as an artist has been figuring out my “why.” Why am I doing art?

Once I figured out why I enjoy creating art and what kind of stories I want to tell, things have become a lot easier.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Rose Magazine is set apart from other publications by being a charity-driven magazine. Rose Magazine is a place to let artists showcase their work and get compensated; while bringing awareness to social justice issues.

Every issue will have non-profit that we will be donating a portion of the profit too. The published artists also have the opportunity to receive a commission based on how many copies they can sell.

Our goal is to publish artists who have been marginalized on other platforms and let their stories be heard.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is a great place to move if you are interested in making art your job. There are so many different types of people who are extremely talented and hardworking that live in this city. Being around the best of the best in the industry you want to be apart of teaches you how to rise to the occasion.
