Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Murray.
Hi Hannah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a professional violinist and a musician’s health and wellness specialist. It has been both a long and winding road and a wild, fast and furious ride to this point in my career. I was a principal player in a symphony orchestra for many years and taught a large private studio of young violinists. But as my passions and interests expanded beyond the scope of classical music, I followed my instincts and pursued additional training and non-traditional performance opportunities. I am now a Timani teacher – the only one in California, a certified yoga teacher, a music teacher, a freelance performer, a recording artist, and the co-founder of corpSonore – sound | body | wellness, a platform for musicians’ health and wellness. My career has taken me all over the world, and I’m so grateful and amazed by the opportunities I’ve had and continue to experience.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
One thing they REALLY don’t teach you in music school is how to start or run a business. So, when we first founded corpSonore, everything was new – from website design and podcast editing to reaching out to contributors, figuring out how to make money, how to stay organized and track growth – all of it was very foreign and overwhelming at first. It required massive personal growth, patience, and perseverance to build and hone my non-violin player skills. It was hard!
It has not been smooth, but it has been (mostly) fun and, at the very least, wild. I’m still learning so much every day, but now, learning a new skill or technology doesn’t feel overwhelming and scary. Instead, I understand that it will take time and may not be perfect initially, but it will ultimately be worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about CorpSonore – Sound | Body | Wellness?
corpSonore – sound | body | wellness, was born out of my frustration, and if I’m being honest, pure outrage at how injury prevention and wellness research does not make it into music training and education in the same way that the sports and athletic worlds apply research and scientific advancements. While in graduate school, I spent hours in the university library looking for sources and studies that recognized and documented injury prevalence in the music industry and the positive effects of a regular yoga practice. I was initially delighted to find many studies on both topics but frustrated by the prevalence of injury in the musician industry, and no formal attempt had been made to update the curriculum – on a national level – to include new information, research about prevention, and other topics that dramatically affect our musical competence and success. I became obsessed with creating a platform wholly dedicated to musicians where they could find research, information, providers, and solutions that fit their unique needs. Thus corpSonore – sound | body | wellness was born. We are now in our fifth season as a publication and podcast and added wellness workshops, movement classes, and private sessions to our offerings last year. We curate content that bridges the gap between research and practice so that musicians can find the tools and resources they need for ultimate success on and off stage at every step of their careers. We cover everything from anatomy to nutrition, entrepreneurship, movement modalities, performance psychology, endurance, and much more. We’re known for our inclusivity, acknowledging that we’re all at different places in our health and healing journeys and need unique solutions. We also pride ourselves on working with experts in their fields to ensure the content we share is of the highest quality.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
When we first started corpSonore, every time I told my fellow musicians that I was building this platform about health and wellness felt like a risk. I worried that people would judge me as a failure because I was passionate about something beyond the scope of a traditional music career. Gradually, of course, I began to own this new identity and grow into it. Now, every time we create and offer something new at corpSonore, it feels like a risk at first but ultimately turns out to be the most logical next step forward.
