Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Morrow.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m originally from London and grew up in an eclectic household full of music, art and books. My father was an Irish musicologist and my mother is an Austrian/Jewish emigre. Both my parents encouraged me and my three brothers to stretch our own creativity even as young children.
I left school at 17 and started working for Virgin Records where I did a long stint on the label side as a product manager working on numerous artists and marketing campaigns. I loved the work and learnt so much while I was there but wanted to expand my world and decided to go to college and do a BA in ceramics at London’s Camberwell School of Art. A couple of years after graduating, I moved to NYC and worked as a prop stylist on numerous magazines and a couple of independent films. My design background really informed my styling work while also pushed me to expand my knowledge and interests in different areas of design.
My husband and I decided to move to LA on a lark and four years later, I launched H for Hannah.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have been many obstacles but I do believe through those that I’m in a much better place and I’ve learnt a ton. I initially was designing my pieces and getting them made in the UK from bone china, this meant coordinating with a small factory and as much as this is still a part of my business, it does mean that certain deadlines are out of your control. About two years ago, I started my journey back to making and am now also hand making a different line here in Los Angeles. I am very happy to be doing all aspects of my business myself and It’s been a huge learning curve with firing and refining the making process but I honestly love it all.
H for Hannah – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a ceramicist and have a line of colored pots/planters that come in 28 different colors. There are many colored ceramics but 28 different ones is pretty unusual. I also design pieces that are made in the UK from bone china. I really enjoy dealing with different customers from all over the world and just love the thought that my pieces may be tiny part of people’s daily lives, what a privilege.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think one of the things I’ve learnt through COVID is to really celebrate the micro whether it’s a great cup of coffee or a good conversation with a friend. I see success in the same way, it’s all the small things that are really quite large that make a life well-lived.
