Today we’d like to introduce you to Hania.
Hania, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a female alt pop artist. I’ve started my solo project in the Fall of 2018. I was born and raised in the south of Poland. Music has always been a part of my life. At the age of five, I went to my sister’s piano lesson and the music teacher noticed I have some undiscovered potential. When I was eight, I asked my parents to get me a guitar for Christmas. From that time, my passion for music grew and I’ve started to pick up new instruments and skills. I began writing my own songs and performing them on every occasion I got. I loved sharing music with others. I spent my teenage years studying music, acting and dance. When I had to make a decision on what to do after high school, I had no doubts I wanted to pursue my passion. I auditioned for only two schools: Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London and Berklee College of Music in Boston. I ended up getting accepted to Berklee, which seemed insane to me at that time. I knew moving to the USA was nearly impossible and not something I had planned, however with the help of my family I was able to come here.
I made the decision to start my solo project in the Fall of 2018. After trying different musical paths while studying at Berklee I knew what was the right thing for me. I started working on my debut material with a Norwegian producer Cuetrek (Rolf Bendik Johnsen) and was planning on releasing it in the beginning of 2019. I connected with an independent label around the beginning of February and we ended up signing a recording agreement which put all my release plans on hold. I worked with the same team throughout the whole year and then decided to split our ways in the beginning of this year.
I was able to debut with my single on March 27th which found its place on New Music Friday Spotify in Poland and drew attention of some great online publications. I’ve released another single called “You” on May 1st. My next song “Hollywood” comes out on June 5th. I was supposed to play in New York, LA and Toronto throughout March and April. All the shows are postponed due to the current situation but I’m very excited to play them when the time is right and safe to do so.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has been a big step for me to move away from home at the age of 18. Being so far from where I grew up and my family was quite difficult at times. It has definitely been a learning curve, which made me grow a lot. I am nothing but thankful for it.
Please tell us about Hania.
When I made a decision to start “Hania” a lot of things happened organically. I wanted my brand to be authentic to who I am and something that makes me excited. I wanted it to reflect on the fact I was raised in a rural environment and how passionate I was about the idea of free expression. I want my music to tell stories and describe feelings that are relevant and universal for everyone.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t think I would want to change anything about my journey. Every experience has taught me something new. Some business relationships in this past year have been disappointing and challenging. I feel very lucky I was able to move on from that chapter quickly. I know it can be hard to do that in the music industry.
