Meet Hana Oh of Hana Ink Studio in Anaheim

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hana Oh.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Hana. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story as a tattoo artist begins from that one night in San Diego. After going through some personal struggles, my husband, David, and I decided to take a trip to San Diego for a weekend getaway to refresh and recalibrate my mind. After a long day of exploring the city and great meals, we were taking a stroll along the shore of the beautiful Coronado beach at sunset. And somehow, we ended up talking about getting tattoos to make the night more memorable. Although I had never gotten a tattoo, it quickly drew me to the impulsive idea, and I was already in a chair getting the cross tattooed on my wrist before I even realized it. I was nervous, but the tattoo artist’s professional demeanor with patience and his willingness to communicate made my experience very much enjoyable. And the great impression of my first tattoo experience got me to desire pursuing a career in tattooing. Such an experience was unforgettable and was like a gift. That’s how that one night’s impulsive decision led me to this journey.

Just like the gift I received, for all of my clients, especially for the first-timers that give trust in me and my works, I do my best to give a gift of memorable tattoo experience. Tattoos are the most personal artworks that individuals can own. And over 20 years of experience in fine arts and studying under great artists during pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Laguna College of Art and Design makes it possible for me to bring my clients’ imagination to reality and to achieve a high level of precision. This beautiful and unique experience of filling a space with great imagination and inking individuals’ stories on the most priceless surface makes me feel privileged to be on this wonderful journey.

Has it been a smooth road?
Like many other artists and small business owners, I also had difficulty putting myself on the map. To overcome the struggle, instead of pouring money into marketing, I decided to shift my focus on my clients. I spent a lot of time with each client to communicate and understand their needs and wants to build trust, and my loyal clients began to spread words about my business. With the help of my clients and their trust in my works, my business quickly grew. Now, I have a lot of returning clients that make me grateful for what I do.

This feeling of gratefulness is something I had never experienced in my previous career as a fine artist. I liked what I did, and it gave me a certain degree of satisfaction when I finished my artworks. But it comes nowhere close to what I feel when I see my clients smiling or even tearing up when they see their tattoos after patiently waiting for the moment. And it brings me so much joy to be a part of their healing, happiness, and celebration as their tattoo artist.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is the center of fashion, music, art, and a mixture of cultures that attract a lot of people from different backgrounds that are usually receptive to new ideas, new trends. Tattoos are no longer the exclusive property of a few specific demographics, at least not in LA. People get tattoos for many different reasons — for its fashion and status value, personal expression, celebration, and even healing. As the population that is in demand for tattoos and a wide range of different styles is growing, LA and its nearby cities and counties are great places for tattoo artists to find lots of opportunities to grow and expand professionally.
