Today we’d like to introduce you to Haley Weinberg.
Haley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always had a passion for art and creating things. When I was very young, I was always coloring, having fashion shows, or playing with my favorite toy, the lite bright. I would sit and create colorful light pictures until the light bulb got too hot on my face. I also danced competitively throughout my school years until college. I always embellished my own costumes and loved customizing and transforming each garment. In college, after my dad passed away suddenly, I turned to painting and sewing. I found this method of escape to be calming and relaxing. I volunteered to create costumes for a fundraiser musical that I was a part of, which reminded me how much I enjoyed designing and creating costumes. The reactions of the audience and cast members really made the whole process rewarding—especially when I won the costume award my senior year!
After graduation, I moved home and continued creating costumes, but now for dance friends, pageants and pro-sports teams. What was the most rewarding was working directly with my clients and seeing how pleased they were with the final result.
A few years ago, I visited my sister in LA, and worked on some projects during my visit. I wanted to see if i would be interested in expanding my work life in LA. Since then, I have created a life, out here, for myself. Moving here and immersing myself in the fashion design world was a big risk, but was also very rewarding. Now, I have worked on projects for television shows and traveling tours which has been amazing. Seeing garments, on stage and on television, that I have helped create, is an unrealistic feeling; it’s just so cool!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth road? Are there any smooth roads here in Los Angeles? My road has not been the smoothest, but has been full of experiences which have made me wiser and more well-rounded as a designer. Some of my experiences have been amazing, while others have been difficult and challenging. When I first moved here, I was not used to the wide array of personalities present in Los Angeles. Working with many different types of people has made me realize that not everyone I meet is going to be a breath of fresh air. Strong opinions may not always be in my favor. However, I believe that my work can speak for itself in this industry. I have met a few unbelievable people, who I currently work with, who have made this experience worth it. I have learned to surround myself with people who have the same values, work ethic, and loyalty that you are looking for. It makes for a smooth road and a good time!
Haley Jo Weinberg – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company doesn’t fit into a specific category per se. I do create a majority of custom clothing and costumes, but I do not limit myself to that specific category in the industry. I also enjoy making jewelry, headpieces/accessories, props, and decor. I am known for being able to make whatever someone is looking for. I love being able to create new and unique items and I will go to the ends of the earth to create and discover ways to make it work, whatever that may entail. I am most proud of myself in regards to my company in that I have created lasting relationships with clients. Not only do I have clients that return to me for certain items, but they refer me to other friends/family/co-workers. I feel that it’s very important to create relationships with clients because, to me, it’s not all about making money. I love what I do. It’s all about the process and letting the client know they can be as involved as they want in the creation process.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I don’t think I have a specific “proudest moment” of my career, because each project and new experience is always rewarding and exciting to me. I would say I am proud of myself when I am in public and run into someone I have worked for or within the past, and they remember me. When they make a point to say hello, it makes me feel as if I have made a lasting impression and left them with a positive experience.
Who else deserves credit – have you had mentors, supporters, cheerleaders, advocates, clients or teammates that have played a big role in your success or the success of the business? If so –who are they and what role did they plan / how did they help.
My mom has been a supporter of mine since day one. If I didn’t have her, I wouldn’t have been able to move out to LA to pursue my dreams out here. She isn’t necessarily thrilled that I live across the country from her, but she understands that it’s my passion and dream. She wants me to be happy and successful, which is why she continues to support me. My sister is honestly my biggest cheerleader. From my dancing days, to now, she always has been there. She always shows a genuine interest and likes to know everything I’m involved in, and loves to tell people all about the fun projects I get to work on. My therapist has also been one of the best things to happen to me since moving to LA. I am not ashamed or embarrassed to tell people I have a therapist, because she has helped me become the confident, successful, and happy person that I am today. Last, the designer I work for definitely deserves some credit. She is a brilliant, strong, and kind lady who has been beyond amazing to meet. She has allowed me to experience parts of this industry I could have never imagined. She is helpful, loyal, funny, genius, and I am very very lucky to know her and be a part of her life and work career.
