Meet Gretchen Tiernan and Megan Richardson of Sand Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gretchen Tiernan and Megan Richardson.

Gretchen and Megan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We started Sand Spa because we knew firsthand the many benefits of massage treatments. As collegiate basketball players, we used massage regularly to treat ailments, improve mobility and prolong the longevity of our playing careers. We found that massage not only made our bodies feel better physically, we experienced how it helped us manage stress, get a better night’s sleep and improve our overall mental well-being.

As athletes, we had access to regular massage treatments. In the real world, lavish, expensive, and sometimes-lengthy spa visits aren’t ideal for anybody dealing with life’s day-to-day challenges. We set out to create a place for the everyday person to experience high-quality spa services at affordable prices on a more frequent basis. We believe a trip to the spa shouldn’t happen once a year; it should be apart of your lifestyle. Self-care is essential in feeling empowered and enlightened. Self-care starts here.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When we first set out to open Sand Spa we didn’t have a major investment, we did everything ourselves. I mean everything. Megan and I worked the front desk from 10am-1opm the entire first year we were open. That discipline and experience really built our business. We got to know all of our clients and the community really well. In retrospect, we built our business from the inside out.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sand Spa story. Tell us more about the business.
At our first location, Sand Spa (our baby) we do massage and skin care. From there we expanded to Hermosa Beach. At our Hermosa location, Sand Spa with Polish we do massage, waxing and have a full-service nail boutique. Our most recent expansion has been our first full-service stand-alone nail salon, Polish by Sand Spa. We are most proud of being exactly who we are, we aren’t fu-fu we aren’t trying to be something we aren’t, we are a reflection of the community and extremely grateful to be doing what we are doing.

What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
Our proudest moment has been being confident and strong about who we are what we are doing. We are together and have been building our relationship and these businesses for a long time. Looking forward together at our future is something we are proud of.
