Today we’d like to introduce you to Graham Keegan.
Graham, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began working with natural dyes in earnest when I moved to Los Angeles almost a decade ago. I was desperate to spend time with plants as a remedy to all the freeways and bustle, and loved the fact that I could grow almost anything here. I began to collect dye seeds and experiment with the colors that I grew. Over the years I soaked up as much information and experience as I could through practical efforts (read failures) and historic texts. Eventually I began to teach what I have learned and sell the fruits of my labor, my textile designs to brands who wanted the hand-made, refined natural dyed look.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest challenge that I faced (and still face) is the juggling act of pursuing both ideas that are inspiring and exciting to me as well as figuring out which of them can become sustainable practices financially and environmentally. I enjoy making a living at this but don’t want to do harm and don’t want to get bored!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Graham Keegan – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m know for creating intricate (and simple) textile patterns using natural dyes from plants and minerals. I specialize in block printing and a resist pattern making style called katazome where rice paste is spread on the fabric to keep portions of it white throughout the dye process. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with anyone who is curious enough to ask and I try to be as generous as possible with the information that I’ve gathered.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Los Angeles is an incredible place to be based for two main reasons. First, everything grows here. Well, not EVERYTHING, but year-round I have access to plants that I can use for dyeing and I’m able to grow as much of my own colors as I could ever want. Second, the community in Los Angeles is very supportive (both verbally and financially) of artistic endeavors. I feel there is a real respect for artists and craftspeople in this town and it shows.
