Today we’d like to introduce you to Czar Goss.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My interests in photography have evolved quite a bit from when I first began tinkering with cameras. I was initially drawn to the technical aspects of photography and spent lots of time learning about different types of cameras, lenses and lighting equipment. In the first couple of years I focused mostly on in-studio and environmental portraits.
Three years ago, a couple of friends of mine, familiar with the portrait work I had be sharing, asked me to photograph their weddings and I discovered a new kind of challenge. I photographed two weddings my first year and my business has grown from there, mostly by word of mouth. I’ve also been fortunate to make some great connections in the industry that have helped immensely with personal and professional growth.
Every wedding is different, with new people, styling, locations, details and other variables. There’s tons of opportunity to experiment and be creative and that’s what I love about shooting weddings.
Has it been a smooth road?
Any entrepreneur can attest to how difficult and time consuming it can be to operate one’s own business. It’s serious work, and being a wedding photographer is no different.
I would not say it’s been a smooth road to this point. I had to stop (a few times) along the way and ask myself if I was happy doing what I was doing and, more importantly, why I was doing what I was doing. Having those two questions answered helps with defining a style (brand) of photography, building a portfolio that truly represents who I am and who my “ideal clients” are and, later, marketing that material to attract new clients who will appreciate the work I do. It’s an on-going, ever-evolving process.
All that said, wedding photography has introduced me to some amazing new people, places and experiences and I’m beyond grateful for that.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Photographs by Czar Goss story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a portrait and wedding photographer, based in Los Angeles.
The friendships that have been formed with past clients and industry peers as well as the destinations I’ve been able to travel to are what I’m most proud of. Photography has been a gateway to many new experiences for me.
Photographic styles are as unique as people themselves. Who I am definitely comes through in my images. I’m an introvert, first and foremost; quiet and (generally) put a lot of thought into anything I say, think or do. That includes making photographs. Some of my favorite images are of people/couples in quiet reflection or carefully arranged details. I’m intentional in creating art and I think it shows.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
As of late, there’s been a reemergence of film as a popular capture medium for photographers (and videographers) and there’s a niche market in this industry for the unique look/feel that different film stocks provide. Much of my wedding work these days is shot on film. The textures and tones are a great match for weddings. Film and film cameras have certainly changed the way I shoot and the look/feel of my end product.
There are so many facets of the industry and they’re all constantly evolving. Couples planning weddings these days are making bolder and more personal choices with their wedding details, including locations, attire, florals and even invitations. Photography, of course, is no exception. Brides and grooms are recognizing the different creative styles of vendors available to them. For this reason, it’s important to have a brand that’s uniquely different, and something clients can truly connect with.
