Meet Good Eats

Today we’d like to introduce you to Good Eats.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Our genesis is not unlike other hip hop supergroups. Jimmy, Ald, and Hobbes first crossed paths as wordsmithing teenagers. The first real-world colliding interaction being a meeting of mutual friends after school in the 11th grade. Freestyle sessions entitled the “AFTER SCHOOL SPECIAL”. This eventually carried over to the next year as “FREESTYLE FRIDAY”. This was where every Friday emcees would sharpen their swords in freestyle battles and take part in almost never-ending ciphers.

It was our Eastside answer to The Goodlife Café and Project Blowed. That spawned a collective group of nine creative individuals named “Channel 9”. We continued making music videos and collaborative projects through the years, spearheaded by our late friend Erick Sebastian Zuniga. Working with the likes of Knocksteady Productions, Dumbfoundead, and various talented musicians. After a few ones off singles, various live shows, and an extended YouTube channel entitled “Ch9fam”, Good Eats decided it was time to form a separate individual trio and release a debut EP in late 2018.

Being food/chef culture enthusiast, our instantaneous collaborative momentum garnered us attention and listeners of jazz hip hop through the powerful tool that is known as getting out of the house and talking to people. Legend has it, Good Eats was officially introduced to the world at 43rd and Leimert, the location of the original Project Blowed. Full circle moment, shout out to the homie VerBS. Over 100,000+ plays, a collaborative effort with influential musicians, and countless live performances later, we’ve forwarded into what we are today – Good Eats

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never a smooth road by any stretch of the imagination. And if it was, it wouldn’t be worth anything. As naturally talented folks we’ve learned that talent can only get you so far. With our talent, we craft a hustle and with that comes learning how to prioritize our dedication.

Be it a record or performance, give that moment 110 percent of what it needs. We are from a more disenfranchised side of town and continuously use our surroundings to fuel our drive. Life experience is the greatest teacher. That’s what we use to tell our stories and speak our truth. It’s something that is only taught through experience. Sometimes It’s like we’re trying to make a dish without reading the step by step recipe – but we prefer it that way.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
Hard-hitting jazz-influenced sounds with a modern touch are our product. This is our music venture. Food is important to us and we treat our music as if it is an expertly presented dish, with our mise en place in the forefront. Creativity through honest expression is used as our main ingredient. Defined by versatility in tastes and sounds. We are versed in street tacos to the bib gourmand, to your Michelin rated restaurants. Our palate reaches far and wide to accommodate our open sensibilities. We are proud of being able to provide a voice for the community of musicians and people trying to live an honest life. We are also hip hop trivia champions and over accomplishing taco enthusiast.

What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
For us, luck is preparation meeting opportunity. More so, it’s timing and positioning. We’re in a good place with what we have said “yes” to and also with what we have said “no” to. We’ve had the opportunity to take certain avenues, but we pride ourselves in staying true to the sound and how we interpret and express that into a new sound. Learning experiences are as valued as the successful outcomes. And with that, we have the power to position ourselves into a great place. Patience is good, but you gotta be a go-getting mutha fucka, mutha fucka! I think John Glenn from Venice, CA said that once.

There is much more to look forward to. This is just the beginning.
