Today we’d like to introduce you to Giovanni Du Bose.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Giovanni. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story thus far is a bit of a ride, my life literally got to this point strictly from my interest in streetwear and wanting to create a lifestyle brand with a message. Thorough was started in 2015, as a way to fill a void I felt was missing at the time, and that was streetwear with an authentic approach and higher message attached to it. I’m originally from San Bernardino, CA which isn’t a hotbed fashion or clothing resource, so I started to frequent LA in hopes to acquire the business relationships and mentors I needed to succeed in this venture. Over time, I did in fact develop genuine relationships with the right people. In going to these events, I would find myself feeling like things needed to be documented so I decided to start bringing a film camera along to capture memories and moments from these evenings.
One particular event in 2017 was for A$AP Rocky and Midnight Studios which required an amount of money spent to attend. A fairy godmother of sorts approached me needing a photographer to cover the party for an online publication, and the rest is history. From that moment, I found myself learning the ins and outs of what was just a hobby throughout my life for me. Doing so has allowed me to be on a number of music video sets, film sets, and also freelance at MILK Studios here in Los Angeles.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s all about perspective, I can say in my mind it hasn’t been the smoothest road, there were definitely days and nights where I questioned if I was on the right path if this all was worth it and if I could really make it. I say its about perspective because everyone’s journey is different and where I thought things are arduous for me could be a cakewalk for someone else, so I choose to appreciate whatever circumstances that are thrown my way. Nine times out of ten they’re usually in place to help me grow or lead me to something better.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I wear several hats so it depends on the company in question. Most people in this city know me for my photography services. My specialties within that art form are portraiture, lifestyle, life show/event, behind the scenes, and sports photography. What am I most proud of? Honestly, it’s the simple fact that I get to this as a job, I remember daydreaming while working in retail and thinking about the moment I’m in now. As far as what sets me apart, I’m not sure…I have my style and way of execution and I hope that those who view my work can see that immediately. I let my eye lead, whatever it likes, I shoot. I have plenty of inspirations from the past as well (Gordon Parks, Irving Penn, etc. that I like to remix and emulate through my work, but it’s in homage not to isolate or call attention to myself. However, I do look at myself as a creative scientist so as time goes on, I will be sharing my other talents and gifts in their proper seasons of my life.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Seeing Magic Johnson at the 1992 MidSummer Nights Classic, I was three, and somehow still remember elements of that night vividly. Other than that, it was when I got my first camera at six…didn’t have any film in it, but as a child with an imagination it was easy for me to make believe I was capturing moments.
