Meet Gina Stovall of Two Days Off in West LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gina Stovall.

Gina, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Two Days Off in early 2018. The idea of starting a sustainable clothing line had been knocking around in my head for a couple of years, but it wasn’t until my partner and I moved from NYC to LA that that idea felt like a real possibility. I had been exploring slow fashion in my own wardrobe for a few years and had begun sewing my own clothes again, something that I abandoned in my early twenties. It was really at the urging of friends that I make my designs available to more people that I encouraged me to take the plunge.

I am actually geologist by training and specialized in climate research and solutions so I had no idea what it meant to be an entrepreneur when I began. But one thing I did understand was the urgency of climate change. I knew when I started Two Days Off that climate change and sustainability would be a central focus of the company, so since I have chosen to grow slowly as I discover the most environmentally and socially responsible way to operate.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has definitely been challenging and a big unknown, but fortunately for me, I am a scientist and that the unknown excites me to figure out! I realized pretty early on I had no idea how clothes are made at scale. Sourcing was a huge unknown, and even things like fulfillment and packaging were huge question marks.

Now looking back though, all the things I didn’t know worked to my advantage because as I researched and learned how things are typically done I was able to question if the status quo was what I wanted for my business. The fashion industry is an archaic one operating the same way as it has for decades. My whole mission in creating Two Days Off was to do things differently, to do things more sustainably. So while there have been lots of challenges along the way, I think they were all important ones to face and deliberate on.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Two Days Off – what should we know?
Two Days Off is a sustainable line of thoughtful pieces made here in Los Angeles. Each garment is made-to-order or in super small batches from locally sourced deadstock fabric. We emphasize the use of natural fibers in our designs and each piece is constructed to last. Our environmental and social impact is of utmost importance and we strive to meet our values in every aspect of the business from how we produce and package our garments to how we sell them. I think what sets us apart from others is that we truly believe that a good wardrobe should be simple, conscious, and have enough ease for your every day and we stick to those values in every aspect of how we do business.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My partner and my sister deserve a huge amount of credit for being my biggest and most steadfast supporters. When I am having a moment of doubt or paralysis they are there to recenter me so I can keep moving forward. And the other unsung heroes are my internet community and customers who are in large part why Two Days Off exist. I have connected with so many beautiful and like-minded souls via social media and I’ll never be able to fully express my gratitude for them.
