Meet Gina Rogers of Ginger Zumba in Sherman Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gina Rogers.

Gina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
All I wanted to do growing up was dance. But, my parents insisted I go to college and get a “real” job. We couldn’t afford dance classes, so it wasn’t until college, that I took my first “real” dance class. And, I was TERRIBLE! Going “across the floor” in warm ups, I felt like I looked like a cat in wet grass. I did have a few key individuals who gave me private coaching in tap, hip hop and ballroom… I excelled at Latin Ballroom and actually competed for about a year.

I was in ecstasy! But, my partner started partying a little too hard showed up at rehearsals hungover. The third time he dropped me while doing a lift, I ended our partnership. I couldn’t find another “match” and gave it up and moved to LA. I couldn’t compete at all with dancers here, so I signed up for classes at Santa Monica College and took hip hop classes at Golds in Venice. My sister was the one who suggested I teach Zumba. I had my reservations at first… “Zumba? Those cheesy infomercials where they wear all the neon bracelets??” Well, I took a class and the rest is history.

It’s not always easy, Group Fitness Instructors put our hearts and souls into our classes and some of the things that gym members say to you can be hurtful to say the least. But, the amazing people I’ve met and friends I’ve made FAR outnumber the negative ones. I have taught ALL over LA, and even produced a short film based on my experiences. I’ll be forever grateful to my sister and all the coaches and mentors I’ve had along the way. Especially my husband who doesn’t particularly care for “Zumba music”.

Has it been a smooth road?
Ha. So many struggles. From students storming out of class or telling me I’m “the worst Zumba Instructor in all the world”, to studio owners putting me in comprising positions, I wouldn’t say it’s been a “Cake Walk”.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I teach Zumba(r) Fitness classes, that boost confidence, improve health and encourage a sense of community and camaraderie. My favorite students are those who come to class a little nervous and tell me they’ve never danced before or can’t dance…. she/he keeps coming to class and before we know it, I catch her/him lost in the music, dancing like nobody’s watching! I include as many different styles of music/dance as possible AND, I attempt to maintain choreography just challenging enough to keep the regulars on their toes and the newbies feeling successful. My monthly newsletter contains schedule/pricing info, links to new choreo videos, and any other community news, spotlighting students who are advertising their business, class or creative endeavor(play, music, etc.). I even provide info on other dance classes in the area:)

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
LA is a beast! The competition here is off the charts! But, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it inspires creativity and individuality. As a few other interviewees have stated: Focusing on what makes you different and realizing that your “tribe” will find you. You may not attract EVERYONE, but there are enough clients to go around:)
