Today we’d like to introduce you to Georgina O’Farrill.
Georgina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
During my first intro yoga class, I discovered that after years of running, kickboxing and hitting the gym, I couldn’t clasp my hands behind my back. I realized then that I had two choices: change my name to Vinnie or start doing yoga. Since then, I have completed three yoga teacher trainings: Power Yoga with Brenda Strong, a YogaWorks training with Maty Ezraty and Lisa Walford and one with Naime Jezeny, Sue Elkind and Noah Maze at City Yoga. Starting in 2002, I taught Pre/Post Natal yoga at Black Dog Yoga in Sherman Oaks. In 2008, I asked the then-owner if he would be interested in adding a family component to the studio. He thought it was a great idea and encouraged me to open up my own specialized “sister” studio. Most yoga studios offer Pre/Post Natal yoga once a week, in the middle of the week, in the middle of the day. I offer Pre/Post Natal every day at prime times, in the morning and evening. I also offer Baby and Me classes daily, as well as other specialty classes throughout the week.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The only obstacle I’ve encountered is that this demographic is a bit transient. However, having said that, my mommies come back to the studio for subsequent pregnancies, and everybody loves Baby and Me— it’s just beyond cute!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Two Hearts Yoga – what should we know?
Two Hearts Yoga Studio is a family studio. We offer Pre/Post Natal classes daily, even up to three times a day. Just because you get pregnant doesn’t mean you stop working, so we want to make it convenient for mothers-to-be, as well as new mothers, to get to yoga class. Yoga, pregnancy, and motherhood, go hand-in-hand— you need access to your breath, strength, flexibility, and peace of mind.
We also offer Baby and Me daily. We firmly believe that parents should be able to reconnect with their bodies and breathe without having to leave their babies or fuss about childcare. We believe that the quality of your caregiving is impacted by your self-care. So, have that date night, take the nap, and go to yoga class!
We also have a wellness component. In house, we offer chiropractic care, acupuncture, and massage. We also have a resident midwife!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Shirley and Steve O’Connor, the original owners of Black Dog Yoga Studio, for encouraging me to provide this important service to the community. Rose Gresch, the manager of Black Dog for 13 years, who has always offered her wisdom in regards to running the studio. All of my teachers, for taking the care and time to train with me, as well as others, to be the best that they can be to better serve our families.
My husband, Mark, for building a magnificent space! My daughter, Isabel, for being supportive and helpful, from social media to working the desk. And to my students, for their willingness, courage, humor, in light of all those hormones!
